What does this tell us about our team is more comfortable winning in the road than at home. It’s like they feel pressure in front of the home crowd. Maybe I’m jumping to conclusions. Is this a sign of a young team. I mean young in the sense of major league service time . There average 26 years . There is much to like about this team. Or it may tell us that they ran into a very strong Orioles team and bookended it with a strong Cleveland team for 7 of the 10 games and lost Story and, effectively, Devers for the homestand, had no Pivetta and had to make some on the fly adjustments.

So most projections had the Sox at near .500 If you were to know that within the first 3 weeks they would: a) Lose Giolito for the season before it starts b) Lose Story for the season after 8 games c) Lose Pivetta for some unknown period after 2 appearances d) Have Devers off to a slow and injury plagued start e) Have the Sox tied with the Marlins with most blown saves (5) f) Have bat first Grissom yet to debut g) Lead all of MLB in errors through 21 games
What would you expect their record to be after 21 games and would yo have revised (lower one assumes) you season estimate? APRIL FOOL!

It's not just the 20 errors, it's also how devastating they've been. I wonder what the teams URA (UNearned Run Average) is. gotta be the worst by far.

The YOUNG team came out flat against one of the best pitchers in the game on a day when they found out that they have lost their veteran gold glove shortstop and team leader for the year along with their veteran and rotation mainstay/anchor for who knows how long 10 games into the season. This is a character test for the kids and for Devers to see if he can be the rock. Just anther story (no pun intended) line for the season, which is still going to be an interesting one. I for one am going to give everyone the chance to settle in before passing judgement.

C-Dan locked up until I'm 85, love it!! 8 years of Sports Center highlights, electric baserunning and better hitting than many want to credit him as they see the flaws and let them obscure the magic. It also somewhat deflates the "Henry is cheap" balloon since they could have saved money for most of the first 6 years but decided to forego that and provide certainty to a player who signed for a mere $10k. Smart and humane with some intangible benefits for C-Dan in the form of peace of mind and reputation restoration for the Sox.

How is possible that with 5 errors in 3 innings that 7 of the 8 runs are earned, gotta feel for Boyle even that he was a contributor to the BNB parade?

So Rafaela is a TTO guy.....Two True outcomes nd in place of the third he stretches doubles into triples and as a bonus makes highlight reel plays in the field at premium positions, but by all means let's sit him down until he learns to eat his vegetables.
I'll agree once/if he falls toward the Mendoza line and fails to make the adjustment needed to hit like he has so far at every level. Until then, let the man play so we can collect on those long ROY odds.

At least when the Rangers announcers on mlb.tv missed that Casas batted for Devers it was lefty for lefty, but mixing up Rafaela (R) for Alvarez (L) shows they need a lot more spring training. Hey they held Ceddanne without a hit, all he did was drive in a run with a sac fly and rob a hit with a diving catch ho-hum.
ETA: apparently the mlb guys are confused as well since they credited (debited?) Alvarez out to C-Dan in the box score.
ETA II: Box score now corrected.

gerry, benfromma... My attitude is that I waited 55 years for my first championship, I can wait a few more for my fifth. On the other hand, a championship this year keeps them on the championship every 4 years pace. Anybody doing it better ? Entitled ? Maybe.... If the Red Sox don't win a World Series this season, they'll be on their second-longest championship drought since 1912. I'm NOT waiting another 86 years for the next championship......but I'm willing to wait til next year. This year, however, 88 wins sneak into the playoffs and win one round.

But the fact that there are 4 guys this young who are expected to provide significant production is really not great. Agreed, and yet -- it's also the team's brightest feature. I'm just excited to have my long time favorite minor leaguer, C-Dan Rafaela, being able to answer the question of who will eat crow, me or all the posters who eagerly included him in every trade proposal they made this winter no matter how mediocre the return. Also, C is +4000 for AL ROY, a number that's sure to come down once he starts showing up in Sports Center for spectacular plays and dynamic baserunning along with the surprising pop in his bat.

I take note of the last paragraph: the basic fact of the matter is that $4.5 million was transferred from Ohtani's account to a bookie. Occam's razor leans in the direction that Ohtani was gambling. Not only that , but it is an long and honorable tradition in Japan for a an close confident to commit seppuku in defense of the master's and reputation. It's not only the Japanese of course, however, their tradition may be the most well known. ETA: This will definitely resurface the Pete Rose "problem" which could lead to his acceptance into the HOF...or there is going to be some really fast tap dancing to keep Ohtani on the field.

I'd be ok if he ended up being a barely serviceable #4/5 for $325mm for however long he can hold up to the workload here. Interesting to see that if he's only that or worse what does that do for Sasaki.
Of course having LAD suffer is alllmost as good as having the MFY suffer so it would be fun to hand Yamamoto and Ohtani around their necks for a decade LOL

How does insurance on Giolito impact how his salary counts against our spending? Not in the slightest, but it certainly makes a difference to the wealth of ownership and if you have a fragile asset it would not be unusual to insure it.

Yeah I know about the don't click it, but I'm a glutton for punishment (been following the Sox as an aware human since the early to mid fifties) so there's that. As to the Dodgers, I was thinking about the management/ownership, and while I expect that they may get some insurance to spread the risk it certainly just got a bit more expensive with that wakeup call.

Wow, the crape hanging around heere has gotten totally out of hand, what do we have a bunch of sports talk radio rejects joining the site to whine and complain? This team is transitioning to a young and exciting group with more on the way and they are going to bond on the fact that everyone is dissing them before the first pitch is thrown in anger.
On the other hand, how nervous are the Dodgers having committed over $1 BILLION to two pitchers (although Ohtani will recoup some of that as a batter) as they see yet another workhorse go down with an apparent season ending injury?
Hopefully we can at least wait until the games that count start before the "woe is us" drowns out the rest because reading this stuff ad infinitum is not my ides of a good time.

It's such a shame that Bobby Dalbec just doesn't have the contact skill because he has the RH power the team could use. Unfortunately it does ot appear that the Jarren Duran "miracle" will strike twice.

But is there really a change? Perhaps what happened - and what got Bloom fired - was a failure to carry out the vision which was: sell at the deadline in 2022 unless the playoff odds were high and restock the improving farm system to adjust payroll and gain assets to use on the field or in a trade. The same situation existed for 2023 because no progress was made in '22 and once again Bloom failed to execute believing (I guess) that the Sox had a playoff run in them. The result was two years of lost time in executing the vision thus it would be more a case of vision delayed than vision changed.

Heh, heh... look at all the pitchers in that list! Yeah, but they're all righties so the system needs to be downgraded!

I think I'd take the over on 78 wins. Among other things with a younger team there is a reduced chance of injury (as probably most everyone on this site can attest. That and the fact that the rotation is really not worse than last year except for a partial season of Paxton and a very few Sale outings along with the fact there is significant upside potential for Story, Yoshida and Sale to go along with the natural maturation of Casas, Wong (maybe) and the addition of O'Neill and Grissom just makes for a better balanced offense with a stronger bullpen than last year. Not saying they are on the way to a pennant, just that the over/under at 78 seems asymmetric towards the over.

Here's a real change of pace (changeup?). A dear friend of mine, Nick Humez, passed away last year. Nick was a true polymath with talents too numeral to mention here, but among his skills many were musical. At one point he was teaching a class in Mythology at a New Jersey college and as an aid he wrote a number of songs. His students prevailed upon him to make a CD which he obliged. If you are into mythology (anyone else remember Edith Hamilton's book from their elementary school days?) or just looking for something completely different check out Myth Songs. www.pandora.com/artist/nick-humez/myth-songs/ALhmnbh97v9tr49?corr=knowledge_panel&part=googleIf you just want to try one or two I'd suggest The Oracle or The Olympian Dozen.
