JBJ is not coming back. They're holding his place for Duran. This. Trading Beni was not an opening for JBJ. We need to accept that.

Verdugo is fantastic. Excellent contact hitter with a canon for an arm. Will be great in RF. Graterol has upside, but his injury history is pretty bad.
Best case scenario we acquired extremely watered-down versions of Betts and Price that happen cost significantly less. On the surface this is a salary dump and it's an extremely sad day for Sox fans. I can't believe the is the best we could do for Betts.

I'm old enough to remember the last time the Sox made a lopsided deal to save the owner some money.

One thing that this does is that it opens up other opportunities for people outside of Worcester to see a game too. Worcester is right in the middle of everything. You're a hour and a half from New Hampshire. You're an hour away from Springfield. You're 45 minutes away from Connecticut. An hour and a half from Hartford. An hour away from Providence. 45 minutes away from Boston. That's basically every major city in New England that's a hour or so drive away. You can't really say that about Pawtucket. You had the north and south shore (and Boston) and the rest of Rhode Island in Pawtucket's case. I don't know if that came into the minds of the owners of the PawSox, and I'm sure it's really only about money, but there's opportunities for people around the area to catch a minor league baseball game that haven't experienced one before. Exactly what I was thinking. While it's no closer to Boston, it's much more accessible to decent sized populations of New Englanders.

He always displays tons of power and a low BA in my OOTP sims. Let's hope they got the contact tool wrong! Very happy with this pick and looking forward to seeing how he develops.

Anyone who thinks the Red Sox overpayed for Chris Sale should check out what the Nats just gave up for Adam Eaton. I don't think it was a huge overpay for the Nats. Eaton is one of the most underrated players in baseball. Easily one of the best defensive outfielders, extremely good on base guy with solid speed and some power...he's the ideal leadoff hitter. Had a 6.2 WAR last season, which was good for 13th in the majors according to BR. Based on his team friendly contract of less than $8m/year over the next FIVE years, he will have a surplus value of at least $80m based on WAR projections. That's pretty good value if you ask me. I would say that he has similar value to Jackie Bradley, in terms of contract length (I believe JBJ has 1 more year of control, but could end up making a lot more than Eaton by the time he's a FA) and also talent level with both of them being elite defensive OFers who are high OBP guys (JBJ has more power /Eaton more speed). The Red Sox didn't want to part with JBJ for an elite SP, so it goes to show how valuable those players are. The Nats might have had some concerns with Giolito. He lacked command of his fastball last season and hasn't really developed his changeup like they hoped he would. The talent is still there for him to succeed, but it looks like it will take a few years for the whole package to come together. They sold high, and as we've seen with the frustrating Henry Owens....if you can't command your fastball at the major league level, you will not have much success against professional hitters. The Nats are in win now mode like us, and they feel like Eaton will help them win moreso over the next few years than Giolito would have. We are the same way with Sale over Moncada. Both moves make the respective teams much better, but the trades also hurt the depth. Nats lack a good fallback option if one of their starters get hurt, and the Sox don't really have a plan B for 3rd base if Sandoval gets injured. Hopefully it works out for both of us, and we can be World Series rivals for the next few years. I don't disagree with any of what you said. Eaton is a heck of a ballplayer and Giolito has warts, but the Nats also traded a 22 year-old SP/top-100 prospect (Lopez) and the #29 pick from 2016 (Dunning). Quite the haul. Hard to just narrow it down to Eaton for Giolito.

The last time the Sox acquired a former Gold Glove winning 1B it worked out pretty well. ;-p Moreland isn't perfect, but if used correctly his a solid addition for a relatively cheap price. He's LH, has some pop (despite contact issues), uses all fields, and plays GG level defense at 1B. This isn't an end-game signing. There's more to do. For that I say solid pickup. If you're talking about Adrian Gonzalez, you may want to take another look at how that story ended. Lol. Damn. I forgot about him. I was referring to Mientkiewicz.

Can someone explain the CBA change to me? So teams are capped at $5 mil (or $10) signing bonus for guys under 25. I get that. But what happens in years 2+? How long is the original deal? Does it have to be multi-year? Essentially, what stops a team from signing him for $5/$10, but announcing a $200 Mil contract extension the next day?
Also, and slightly OT, I'm watching the HR Derby and the overlays are all in Japanese, but everyone has English lettering on their jerseys. What gives?

Theo turned Jorge Soler into Wade Davis. DD turned Travis Shaw, Mauricio Dubon and Josh Pennington into Tyler Thornburg. Soler, just because of his power potential, is worth more than Shaw even though Shaw has been the better MLB player so far. However is he worth more than all 3? Comes down to what the Royals were looking for and what the Brewers were looking for. However, I know this. There is not a huge difference between what the Sox gave up and the Cubs gave up but there is a HUGE difference between Wade Davis and Tyler Thornburg. Or at least there has been to date. We have a great organization with the best owners we have ever had IMO, however we are worse off than we could be because they chased off Theo and Francona. DD is given cart blanche and is not as good of a GM as Theo or Cherington. JF is not even in the same class as TF as far as managers go. Not a ton of faith DD is making great trades here despite his track record. It's early but his track record here is just not very good. Very sure JF will miss manage the AL East's best roster next summer. Wade Davis is 31 and a FA next year. Thornburg is 28 and just hitting arb so we have 3 years of control. While Davis is [currently] a better pitcher, guys like Thornburg cost more.

I guess I look at it from a slightly different angle. DD desperately wanted more 8th inning pitching depth. He could have traded some of our top-shelf talent, but he traded 3 guys I'm OK with losing due to depth at their respective positions.
Is Thornburg the best option out there? Probably not. Did we over pay? Possibly, but Shaw and Dubon "may" have peaked and we "may" have sold high on them. Time will tell.
For me, 1) This trade fills a need, 2) keeps our top prospects in Boston, and 3) only marginally thins us out with regards to bench strength (again, Dubon and Shaw could prove that wrong in coming years).

He definitely deserves it and I wish his luck.
I'd love to have Alex Cora or Varitek take his spot.

Per Keith Law that's 2 top 50 prospects, one rated 21 and one rated 46, sounds like a great return to me. That's about the price of a Proven Closerâ„¢. So was the deal actually Brinson & Ortiz for Jeffress? With some Catcher thrown in?

Boston College 2015 draftee an MA native Chris Shaw is believed to be part of the Matt Moore deal per Joel Sherman. Now it's Matt Duffy, Lucius Fox and (Michael?) Santos for Matt Moore.

Maybe Fernandez instead of Kershaw... www.soxprospects.com/future.htmI'll take the 2019 fantasy roster of players who the Red Sox actually have in their system over that. Pat Light...RIP.
