I saw that. Salty was safe, but pretty cool.
Reminded me of a play a guy I played with in Legion ball used to do every once in a while. He'd act like he was stepping out before the pitch and (if the pitcher didn't balk) he'd lower the bat like he was casually dropping it from his shoulder and, if he was doing it right, get a bunt hit cause all the fielders relaxed and he was pretty quick to first. Worked almost anytime he did it against a FB strike. If it was a ball he'd just keep stepping back and drawing the bat back. Of course that worked well enough against 17 year olds in Legion who threw mid-80s or so. Always cool to watch though. He had great eye-hand coordination.

That was pretty close on that pickoff. Rays play some good defense, some great plays by there SS last night.

OK, that's pretty cool.
Why you use that in that situation against Salty, I have no idea though.

OK, that's pretty cool. Why you use that in that situation against Salty, I have no idea though. A one-run game where he thought he had Saltalamacchia napping. A trick move like that is less likely to work against someone who is looking to steal, I'd say.

So - call the game, get a day off still a half-game up, regroup, head to Baltimore, make a few killer deals at the deadline, bring up Xander, then make Tampa come back to the Fens on the next reasonable mutual day off (Aug 12th where Sox would fly home from KC and Tampa would fly in from L.A.) or the 9th (Sox fly to Boston from NY, Tampa from Sea - and yes, I would LOVE to make them fly 5+ hours through the night for either game). Who's with me!?!
(obviously grasping at anything here)

Let's tell Drew the game was called and he can go to the airport. By the time he figures it out hopefully Ben gets him traded.

Game is called. Will be made up on Monday (which was a common off day for both teams).

“@tbtimes_Rays: Not sure what #Rays are doing with their pitching yet, but Monday is Price's day to pitch. Could face #RedSox twice in same series”

That"s what I was hoping for but looking like Doubront vs Fausto or ...Price
BEST STRATEGY: Pray for lightning-filled torrential rain on Mon in Boston starting at 4pm and continuing unabated past midnight.

TB would have to pitch Fausto on Tuesday if they don't Monday. Gives them a chance to give each guy an extra day. I'd be surprised if they pitch Price on Monday. We could pitch Lester on Sunday and Doubront on Monday. But, would have to pitch Workman on Tuesday. Why not give everyone an extra day? Would surely help Lester IMO.

Edes describes Farrell's appraisal of Middlebrooks progress as "lukewarm". He is still inconsistent, according to Farrell. If Farrell isn't blowing smoke, it suggests Will needs to expand his recent little streak.

Guess we can put any of those "Middlebrooks to Chicago" talks away.

The Red Sox have a substantial investment in WBM. Unless they have become convinced that he is not going to improve, I don't think they will trade him now. Until his problems this year, he was the poster boy for the farm system. He came out of high school, and worked his way through the system, performing a little better at each level. Basically, he is a member of the family. I don't think they are ready to give up on him. But, stranger things do happen.
The slump of Iglesias is worrying the team. What if it isn't a slump? It doesn't appear to make sense right now to trade WBM when it isn't clear who will be the SS and 3B next year. Almost certainly one of those positions will go to Bogaerts, but right now it is anyone's guess who will get the other.

I agree about WMB. He deserves to stay another year and work on things. Very critical I guess he will play the winter leagues. I guess he would get a call up to the team for September this of course if he doesn't put it together in August.
One more thing is Baird done or the season. What a pickup if he got his shit together for the stretch run.

Nick Cafardo ?@nickcafardo 9s Red Sox wanted Thursday game to start at 710 pm on drizzle but umpires said no and postponed game. Didn't rain much rest of the night.

Isn't it the team's call to start the games or not and the umps call to stop it once started? Or do I have that backwards? Or all completely screwed up? There is some division in the responsibilities.

There's a rule that says that if it's a team's last visit to a ballpark (as it is here; this is Tampa Bay's last visit to Fenway), the umpires call the game rather than the home team.

The rules on whose call it it to call off or begin playing or how long to wait before postponement must be several pages long.
