That arm action looked a little problematic... Should have laid some money down on this one.

Nova with TJ. Sabathia with microsurgery for knee. Pineda with rotator/labral tear. Tanaka with elbow inflammation (paging Dr. Andrews). I have never seen a team have worse luck with starting pitching. The injuries are all year long and in some cases career threatening. I just do not believe Tanaka is headed for TJ. But if I'm a yankee fan, I feel sick right now.

Let's see, mc Can't , Ells, and Tanaka "short term plus but won't look good towards the end of those contracts". I guess "this's the end" as the doors sang.

Hard not to laugh at them when Tanaka opts out after the 4th year and they end up spending $120 million for about 2.5 seasons.

I root against the Yankees, but I never root for injuries. I especially hate seeing young players get hurt. I don't group Tanaka in that group because he already signed his big contract. Nova though I felt very sympathetic for, especially because he was putting it together.
Although some of these injuries could have been forseen. Sabitha like Halliday and Lester have been workhorses that just avoided injuries for too long. At some point they were going to break down. Pineda has always been injury prone, and Tanaka has had quite the workload for someone his age.

I predict It won't work. UCL will not repair fully through rehab. Name me a single power pitcher who has ever had this work. Todd Stottllemyer was the last to try it then pitch afterwards. He ended up damaging himself so badly it ended his career. Matt Harvey tried this too. Opted for surgery after a few weeks. The Yankees have invested too much in Tanaka for half measures.

Pretty sure Ervin Santana did it.
Wainwright pitched for a few years with one, but still needed Tommy John.

Pretty sure Santana had a sprain, not a partial tear.
Not sure about Wainwright. If he was a tear I stand corrected.

Pretty sure Santana had a sprain, not a partial tear. Not sure about Wainwright. If he was a tear I stand corrected. A sprain is generally the same thing as a partial tear. ADD: but even a successful rehab generally only delays the inevitable. You can't regrow a ligament. It's only a matter of time before it tears completely, so most pitchers just opt to get it fixed ASAP. The only real reason to rehab is if it's minor enough that you think you can make it to retirement before it pops, but with Tanaka as young as he is, I think he opts for surgery sooner rather than later.

I hope he can keep it up. My fantasy rotation appreciates it. Fernandez, wainwright, tanaka.
But seriously, he will lead the league in HRs allowed if he keeps pitching this way so he's going to need to limit base runners to keep the ERA down. Somewhere in Missouri, Adam Wainwright woke up with cold sweats.

Sooooo Tanaka gets TJ and misses 1.5 seasons. Then after coming back strong for 2 years he opts out and gets even more money from NY.

"but I never root for injuries." ----------------------------------- Nope. I've been there. Not nice.
I always thought Tanaka was iffy. Ben's challenge has to be to find a couple of power hitting International FA's that are expensive but not in the catastrophic risk pool like the talented rhp. The pitching for mega dollars doesn't interest me that much.

Such a crushing blow for the Yankees, because the chances of him not needing TJ before the opt out is pretty much none, so they'll lose 1-1.5 seasons of him and then likely need to re-sign him.
The fact that he had been so dominant just makes it that much worse

This thread is interesting right from the very beginning. There were all sorts of questions about the number of innings he had under his belt at 24 years old, about the pitching motion, about his having to change his 6 day pitching schedule to a 5 day, all of it. While it's not possible to know if any, all, or none of the above is responsible, you can bet the Yankers asked the same questions. You pays your money, and takes your chances.
