The shift is not because of Devers, they're just getting young players acclimated to doing it, that's what instructs is for, no?

From BP ten breakout prospects (public portion): Rafael Devers, 3B, Red Sox (Complex League GCL) I wrote up Devers in a previous Ten Pack, but with our breakout topic for this week, I thought he was worth mentioning again. Devers tore up the GCL despite being just 17, hitting .312/.374/.484 with 17 extra-base hits in 42 games. Devers' ability is clear: He has plus bat speed and a strong frame that allows him to drive the baseball without over-swinging. He has the tools to stay at third base and will remain at the hot corner for as long as his still-developing body allows. Devers showed he was comfortable driving the ball and embraces the role of run-producer. He has the ability to go the other way, and once he focuses on using the whole field more consistently, he's going to absolutely take off. That last part is when his breakout season will occur, and there's no reason for it not to be next season. He showed flashes of doing it in the GCL, and it should be a point of focus for him and the Red Sox this offseason. Once he does, his power numbers will jump and he'll have the offensive production to handle any position. –Jeff Moore 4 of the 10 are public, the remainder are subscription: www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=24744

Fresh Devers video from Kiley McDaniel (Fangraph) which include DSL action as Devers hits a HR and the bench goes crazy.

On that first at-bat he seemed to have hit the ball a bit too much far in front of the plate, but oh boy was that weight transfer impressive.

One question: I don't remember it, but I think Xander got the 8-grate, at least as a scale, being ranked here as a prospect. What would Devers have to do to get the same scale and how likely is ist he get's it?

He did at least have an 8 ceiling. 8 on our scale doesn't necessarily mean 8 on scout's scale, fwiw. You'll note that the description here is "elite" and the player comp is Yaz. The thinking with Bogaerts was that if he wasn't an 8, we were literally never going to give a prospect an 8 so why have it. As for Devers, I'd need to see some crazy power from him this year before suggesting an 8 ceiling myself, but I think he's capable. I also think he's close now.

I can understand why no one would ever get an 8/80 grade at the GCL/DSL level. If he still projects the same and is mashing it in a year or two from now in the mid minors that may change but a 7 ceiling is still an all star caliber player. Which is pretty darn good.
Lets also not forget that he's not projecting to be a 5 tool player, and if the bat develops as well as we all hope it does that doesn't really matter.

1:26 Comment From RotoLando Do you believe that Rafael Devers has superstar potential, or does being a Boston prospect generate more hyperbole than warranted. (I swear, there’s got to be a shorthand way to ask this kind of question?) 1:27 Kiley McDaniel: Chance for 60 hit and power and chance to play 3B. I don’t hype players based on their team and he’s easily in the top 100 after playing short-season leagues. He’s #LEGIT

Big boom or bust type player, but I'm excited to see how he progresses.

In my opinion I see far less bust because his hit tool is so good. His floor is high for such a young player.

I'm totally psyched it seeing what he will accomplish this season.....in hopefully Greenville. The few times I saw him last season he hit nothing but "ropes". It will be a lot of fun following his, and Margot's, progress this year.

Are the last three posts about Devers or Margot? Because it'd be stunning if Devers got to Salem this year.

Plan to see them both in June. SP? I've heard of them. Devers is a full year younger than Margot was last year. If they challenge him with a placement in Greenville, if he performs well enough to advance to Salem, that'd absolutely make him one of the top 5-10 prospects in the game, at minimum. It'd put him ahead of even Bogaerts's ridiculous rise. Seriously, there's a successful season for Devers this year that doesn't even involve him making it to Greenville. There's almost literally no way he makes it up to Salem.
