I see another Cody Ross in Brentz as Steve mentioned before the "2012 Battle of Brentz" took place. I don't know how likely this is, but Brentz seems like a smart kid. If he can really work to improve his approach, there is all star potential in his bat. Imagine if something he changes clicks next year, and he cuts his K% to 19%. His power would start to show more in game, then his upside really starts to grow. His power tool is great. A change in his approach and a shrinking of his zone could really bring that power tool out. My head may be in the clouds here, but stranger things have happened.

So... Brentz shot himself according to Deadspin. Sounds like he's okay, but Peter Abraham says he's not going to be on the Spring Training Roster now.
Edit: I really should have mentioned that he accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Cleaning a loaded gun. Not something that is encouraged in gun safety classes.

It sucks for Burress Brentz to have this setback. I was hoping he'd be ready to contribute sooner rather than later. I'm curious where he got shot.

I see a potential .270 maybe .280 average from Brentz and around 25 homers and around 80-90 RBIs at the big league level. These are good numbers, and he may even do better than that if he plays half his games at the Fens. Hope he recovers quickly and will be Boston later this season as a full-time starting outfielder!

We are definitely glass half completely full on some of our prospects with big question marks, aren't we?
Maybe we could package Hernandez and Brentz to Tampa for David Price?

Maybe we could package Hernandez and Brentz to Tampa for David Price? Unfortunately, it would take Bogaerts, Bradley, Barnes, Webster, and Cecchini to get Price, plus considering the fact that Tampa Bay won't trade him within the division. Plus, I'm not at all keen on trading prospects at this time, considering their upside and the fact that they are not that far away from the bigs. I want to hang on to all prospects right now. Trading those guys aforementioned would be trading the future of the team away for one guy.

There is a thread about Hernandez saying that maybe he could fit in at the back of a rotation IF everything breaks right. Then Brentz still has upside, not going to be a huge OBP guy. But the chance for a decent BA and 25-30 hr still exist.

He's fortunate that he didn't shatter any bone, pure dumb luck. Depending on how far away the pistol was from his leg when it went off, just a few degrees difference in where the barrel was pointing might have done just that. That wouldn't have been pretty. Live and learn I guess. It was unlikely he was going to make the club out of camp anyway, and he sealed that deal.

To be fair, in 2002 Barry Zito won the Cy Young because he had more wins than Pedro Martinez. The voters are just a bunch of boobs who vote for the guy they like the most that they can justify giving the award to. Oh, you dominate in every statistical category and I like you? You get the award. Oh, you dominate in every statistical category, but you're a pain to the writers? Well, you weren't a "winner" and the award should go to someone who, "wins".
As far as Brentz is concerned, are Red Sox prospects just cursed? I mean seriously.

shooting yourself in the leg doesn't equal being cursed. If anything, he was lucky as hell that he didn't have a real injury as a result. Consider it a blessing.
