Huge game today. I'm very nervous about the Verlander matchup in Game 3 ... but overall, this has the makings of a terrific series. Of course, the breaks could go all one way and the Sox could lose in 4 or 5 because that's playoff baseball, but these are two very good teams that match up in interesting ways.

Um, if Xander is good enough to pinch-hit with the game on the line in the 9th inning (against a right-hander, nonetheless), shouldn't he be good enough to get the start over Will?

WMB has been hot garbage for 4+ weeks now. Xander should be in there from now on. I really thought he would hit a walk off HR last night.

It was in my mind that entire at bat, and I was jumping every pitch. Looked like he finally got one he could put out the park on the final pitch. Oof. A terrific at bat nonetheless, and his patience and power potential alone are enough to justify putting him in the lineup (WMB only offers one of those two qualities, with perhaps only marginally better defense).

The pitch he should have swung at was the one that Berry stole the base on-- a fastball down the heart of the zone. But, of course, Xander knew that in that situation (with only one strike), he has to let Berry have a chance to get into scoring position.

I'd say tonight is a must-win game. It wouldn't be very good if the Sox headed to Detroit down 0-2. In 8 career starts against the Sox, Scherzer has a 7.02 ERA. Hopefully, the Sox can get the offense going tonight. Go Sox!

I'm really at a loss for how Victorino gets hit by so many pitches. His HBP rate righty-vs-righty is higher than most players' walk rates.
EDIT: Jon Shestakofsky @shesta_Sox Victorino has been hit by a pitch 5 times this postseason. That's the most by any player in a single postseason.

Hopefully, the Sox can get the offense going tonight. Go Sox! After 2004, the only must-win games are elimination games. This franchise has earned that. Having said that, I think Farrell agrees with you, and that's why he's made the lineup switches tonight, though Gomes for Nava looks like a real hunch. People have been yelling literally for months for Carp to get into the lineup more. Farrell has resisted it, I think because he never felt that the team was in any real trouble before. He wasn't going to change the lineup from what had been basically planned until the team was in a difficult position. Well, down 0-1 against a team with pitching as good as the Tigers, and with 3 games coming up in Detroit qualifies as a difficult position, so now he plays his ace in the hole -- offensively. As for Bogaerts/Middlebrooks, I don't know that he's convinced that Xander would be all that much of an upgrade, since he's been sitting around for much of the last month. I suspect that move doesn't happen unless Middlebrooks continues to provide little and the Sox get in a deeper hole -- a last ditch desperation measure, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.

Striking out a lot is a necessary consequence of "working the count." If they can't put balls in play, they won't score runs.

Wow, the Sox have nothing at the plate. It looks like a lot of them are guessing too.

It's been frustrating as hell to watch. But I know this Red Sox offense could erupt at any point, so there's that.

Wow, the Sox have nothing at the plate. It looks like a lot of them are guessing too. And you're surprised at this, in the early going? Detroit has a fine starting staff, and it appears that they have found another gear early on for this series, being challenged by statistically the best offense in baseball. Good pitching can always beat good hitting. Those who said that the Sox have no one to be concerned about but Kershaw -- that's just ignoring the single most important fact of baseball over the last 100+ years. Good hitting can always be driven into a slump by the right kind of pitching. And it doesn't take much of a slump to be eliminated in a short playoff series. Now sure, the Sox can turn this around. But it would be no great surprise if they simply went down in flames.

This "complain after every close call" thing is annoying the hell out of me. If it's two strikes and he's throwing a fastball near the plate, you have to swing the bat.
