As of right now, the Red Sox would have the 18th pick in the draft (from the Yankees for sign Ellsbury), is that correct?

Thanks, just went back and read it, the rule changes were not good timing for the Sox.

Thanks, just went back and read it, the rule changes were not good timing for the Sox. On the other hand, under the old system the Yankees would've only lost their second round pick for signing Ellsbury. Now they lose the comp pick they would've gotten for Granderson.

Thanks, just went back and read it, the rule changes were not good timing for the Sox. Not really bad timing, but rather the entire point of the rule change. The old system heavily incentivized signing other team's free agents and letting your own go. So instead of benefitting poorer teams who lost free agents to rich ones, it instead became a way for rich teams to play musical free agents and stockpile picks.

If we end up with 2 or more picks, I would love it if the Sox took Nick Burdi. A dominant reliever would not be a waste of a first round pick, if we had at least one more to take a higher upside player like Monte Harrison with the other pick.

With the market shaking out, we stand to have a pretty good set of picks in a very good draft year:
Current Draft Order 29.Boston compensation picks: 31.potential pick for Santana (KC) 32.potential pick for Choo CIN) 33.potential pick for Cruz (TEX) 34.potential pick for Jimenez (CLE) 35.McCann (ATL)(for signing with Yankees 36.Fla comp pick for not signing Matt Krook 37.Ellsbury (BOS)(for signing with Yankees) 38.potential pick for Drew 39.Beltran (STL)(for signing with NYC)
If Choo, Santana, Cruz, Jimenez, or Drew sign with a team having picks #11-28 (as they are rumored to be, with Texas, Detroit, Cinn, KC or Baltimore), our first pick of #29 might slide down, potentially 5 slots to 24th.
It is conceivable our comps, currently 37 and 38, could slide to 32 and 33

For them clamoring for a 1B with power there is a dude named Justin Bellinger from the Red Sox's back yard. He's committed to Duke and probably the best HS prospect in the New England area unless I'm missing someone.
Also a hindsight topic for discussion, Would you rather have Tyler Beede or Matt Barnes? At draft time that year I was all in with Barnes so I'm not saying that the Red Sox made the wrong decision or anything.
Beede has had trouble with his command at times but has also shown some of the best stuff in the nation, ace potential. Look for Theo and Co. to take him if he has a strong spring.
I bring this up because I remember many here really wanted it him and now he looks poise to be in the top 10 conversation all spring.

If you're looking at power you have to consider Cal State 3B J.D. Davis. Big time power, but rest of the skill set could be Bryce Brentz like. But if playing the field doesn't work out for him he can always become a power reliever.

Yeah he's a good name to bring up. They like two-way players - Ball, Johnson, Kelly, Brentz plus others I'm missing - so he could fit.

What about the 1B from Indiana, Kyle Schwarber? Not sure he'll be around for our pick, but he has power and control of the strike zone from the scouting reports I read.

I think he probably goes in the top half of the 1st round. Another one is Pentecost who is in the same boat as guy that could fit but is probably a top half guy, ditto for Derek Fisher at UVA. But you never know, guys like JBJ, Barnes, Ranaudo were projected to go very high at this time of the year in their draft year.

With three 1st rd picks mybe we find a way to move up in the draft to get a stud SP or Hitter, it would be exciting to see us trade up in the draft.
Like pedroelgrande said good players fall every year it will and does happen. Stanek was a big prospect this time last year actually the favorite to go #1 for a lot of people then went at the end of rd 1 to the Rays.
Trae Turner, Touki, Beede, Gatewood all strike me as guys who could fall in the draft for different reasons. Id be all over Beede if he fell kids the real deal if you ask me.
Guys id move up to draft/hope fall to us- Kyle Schwarber, Braxton Davidson, Alex Jackson, Jeff Hoffman, Tyler Kolek, Brady Aiken, Beede, Luis Ortiz, Grant Holmes, Sean Newcomb, Aaron Nola, Michael Gettys.
I think Carlos Rondon is the most overrated #1 pick in a long time shame is that there isnt any one as of right now that looks like it could unseat him because this draft isnt very strong at the top and as a whole is just a solid draft. Rondon wont have a lengthy MLB career if you ask me.

Competitive balance picks are so stupid. Yeah, the Cardinals need extra picks. They're clearly struggling to field a competitive team.

Current picks in top 105 (top three rounds):
6 - MIA 5 - ARI/STL 4 - HOU/COL/TOR/MIL/KC/TB/CLE/PIT/ATL/BOS 3 - everyone else (15 teams) 2 - NYM/MFY
(SEA/KC/CIN/TEX/CLE/BOS can all add supplemental picks for the remaining QOFAs (Morales/Santana/Choo/Cruz/Jimenez/Drew, respectively), and the team that signs them (if not their 2013 team) will lose a pick)
Note that MFY would lose pick #55, SEA would lose pick #74 and NYM would lose pick #84; all other teams would lose a pick in the top 50 for signing one QOFA.

I love the high upside guys, Harrison is a perfect example as he could be a stud. Burdi would be a nice pickup, although I probably wouldn't use a first on a reliever since they're more easily obtainable. Rather see them take a power hitter like Conforto, Bellinger or Davis.

Guys, Hate to break it to you but Bellinger is garbage, I got to face him this year in a game. Hes had hype around him since he was like 12. He committed to Vandy really early and he never really panned out. So they basically told him to decommit cause he wasn't going to be able to play there. He's got some serious power when he squares it up but his pitch selection is horrible. The kid can't make contact to save his life. He is all hype and has trouble hitting anyone throwing high 8's plus. Kid struck out 3 times the game we played against him. I wouldn't be suprised if he misses the draft in its entirety. I know you guys aren't going to believe this since he was an All American but trust me he isn't going to pan out.
However Sean Newcomb out of U of Hartford is very intriguing to me. I've see a lot of comp's to Lester that I strongly agree with.

Competitive balance picks are so stupid. Yeah, the Cardinals need extra picks. They're clearly struggling to field a competitive team. Since the Pirates and the Brewers have competitive balance picks, they may be interesting assets to discuss as part of a Mike Carp potential trade package. Does anyone know if a team's draft allotment goes up if it acquires a competitive balance pick?
