I'm still trying to figure out why there was no team option with, say, a $1M buyout. If you rehab a guy who used to be an All Star thinking he'll be at best a part-time player and exceeds expectations, why not cover that as a possibility to the team's advantage in the deal structure? (always fascinated by the deal structure).

I agree that an option would be nice, but in the scenario you laid out the team would also be more than doubling the guaranteed layout, thus lowering the floor. Also, there were other teams interested in his services, so we had to compete with the market.

Yea Cincy thought they had him signed. Allegedly, Grady told them he was going to then Boston swooped in with a good health plan and won him over.

Don't know if it came to anyone's attention, but Nava is having neck problems to the point that he can't swing a bat (Speier). Sizemore may get to earn his keep quickly.

I think there are too many variables here to make a rational judgement on the amount of fair compensation for a second year. It's not like the Sox were the only suitors, we literally changed his mind at the last minute. And at worst, he's not worth a QO.

I was going along with the hypothetical that he exceeds expectations enough for us to want him back.

Always great to have more players than positions. In many countries it's called overpopulation In baseball it's called bountiful assets.
