Beat me to it. It's not the first, last or most recent... wtf? You know what, I just got it. It was the first time since 1918 that the Red Sox won the World Series at home. He could have done a better job at illustrating that because it looks as though this is the first ring that the Red Sox have won since then. He knows what it means and that's all that matters; it's his tattoo after all.

Interesting picture on PeteAbs twitter amount of Bradley. It is a backside view, but he is clearly much more bulky. Pete says he has build up, whatever that means. Definitely seems to be case

Check Pete's blog for today. There is another picture, a side view of him hitting, which shows him to be okay. Pete says he tried to build up shoulders and legs and is not "fat", whatever that means. We will just have to watch and follow.

Whoops, my bad, but responding to my email, Pete claimed he wasn't fat. The backside picture seems to indicate otherwise.

Ah yes, the BSOHL/Fat ARod fever finally hits the SoxProspects forums.
ADD: perhaps ol' Pete is a little sensitive about the f-word. /rimshot

The guy has been at the facilities working out since Dec 28 apparently. I know there is not much to talk about right now but come on don't start reacting to a picture.

It's truck day. The equipment truck will leave Fenway for Florida about 10 am. I feel warmer already.

I am really interested to see how Buchholz throws this spring. Is the shoulder fully healed, the Sox gave him 3 months off last year and when he came back, he had lost some of that free and easy motion.
If this guy could ever string together 32 starts in a season, that would be a huge pick me up for the Sox.

One picture is worth a thousand words Remember a few years back seeing a few pictures of Beckett, Lackey, and Lester in ST that showed them to be "fat". They went on to have mediocre years. It is never too early to worry if you are a Red Sox fan.

So you are using a picture of him facing backwards to worry about wether he's out shape but the guy who is actually there who has seen him up close says he is stronger and that it isn't fat, when there is no reason for him to lie ........ But yeah let's worry about a picture where you can't even see him well.

This spring training will be one of the most interesting in years, for me, with all the young guys around, on the cusp. While, we cannot read too much into Spring results it's still the first real look at the guys after on offseason away. There are a couple guys I'm very interested in.
Doubront and Ruby De La Rosa.
Usually, TBSOHL stuff is overblown, but for some players it means a lot. See John Lackey last season. The Red Sox put great emphasis on these two guys and their conditioning. If Felix comes into camp out of shape this year it will be an enormous disappointment and may make his rays here numbered. I'm a lot higher on Felix's potential than others. If he dedicates himself, I can see a good number 3 borderline #2 starter. He pitches like that for stretches at a time already.
As for Ruby, it's now his first full healthy off season and he's been mentored by Pedro and told his conditioning needs to improve. Could be a huge year for him should he take it seriously. His stuff is tantalizing and while coming to camp in shape guarantees him nothing, it's hugely important. If he doesn't, then I will seriously question his dedication and really won't expect anything from him.
Off the bat, these two are the ones who's conditioning interests me the most.

LOL Freudian slip ? I doubt if they'll trade him within the division. I've been thinking for a while that if Felix comes to camp out of shape that the odds of the Sox trading him increases dramatically. I'm also hoping that he comes to camp BSOHL.

If he dedicates himself, I can see a good number 3 borderline #2 starter. He pitches like that for stretches at a time already. These are my feelings exactly ... I think Felix could be a solid guy in the middle of a rotation for years, if he wants it. He showed that kind of talent last year for significant stretches of the season before fading down the stretch. I'm somewhat optimistic about his getting some BSOHL love this year, but we'll see ... Rubby I think will be less apparent in spring training. We may get some hints, but we'll have to wait and see with him a bit. Overall, the biggest things for me to look at will be Buchholz's health, Doubront's conditioning, the progression of the pitchers in general, and, I guess, Sizemore, although that's less important. Outside of that, I think the success of the team this year will rest in large part on how the two rookies and WMB pan out ... that's a lot depending on three unproven guys. But we won't know much about that in spring training. And, while less important to the team's success this year, it'll be interesting seeing all the young pitching in camp, like Owens, Barnes, etc.

I only saw De La Rosa a few times last year, but I was pretty disappointed in his stuff. The fastball was around 93-94, with not a ton of movement, and while the changeup had good action, it didn't have great separation from the fastball and he didn't throw it for strikes. In other words, he looked pretty pedestrian. If he's to stick as a starter and win a rotation spot in Pawtucket, he needs to come on strong this spring.

Something that no one in the world cared about which was pushed as a narrative by Fox at the last minute because apparently they couldn't think of any other reasons viewers might be interested in a really good series between the two best teams in baseball.

I watched him before the TJ surgery, and I hope that pitcher shows up at some point. That guy did have good arm side action on a 97 mph fastball, with the more like 8-9 mph separation from the changeup.

RDLR threw 98/90 in both the Houston and KC games in early august.
The KC game is from memory (was the video in the BSOHL story) but the Houston video is at his player page.

A few years back I was flipping around the west coast games on mlb extra innings. Ruby was throwing gas with lots of movement. His name stuck in my head. When the trade went down I was sure it couldn't be the same guy the sox were getting in a salary dump.It was. Hope to see that guy again.

Here's RDLR's velocity charts per PITCHf/x: (if the image isn't showing up, click here) He had a few games in 2013 where he was averaging 95+, but his velocity was very inconsistent and he had a number of games where he was in the 93 range (which I must have caught). His velocity is certainly down a few mph when compared to his pre-injury 2011 numbers, when he was routinely 95+ and touched 100. ADD: you can check out some of his Dodgers tape here. This video is particularly impressive, showcasing both the velocity and the arm-side run that was missing last year. Hopefully there's some of that guy left in De La Rosa.

there's also the clear upward trend throughout the season, and the fact that they were handling him with kid gloves last year

So many guys have come back successfully from TJ surgery that we forget that some guys don't ever get it all back ... Rubby will probably light up the gun in ST, and we'll get some good quotes from The Great Pedro about how hard he's worked, etc, etc. But can he maintain his velocity over the course of a season? Or even over a full start? We'll have to see. Sure would be great ...
This is a whole other thing to predict about Spring Training: who will provide totally unwarranted hype and excitement? Seems to happen every year. Last year, it was Webster and RDLR, with a secondary award to JBJ (but his had some validity to it, after all). This year, Sizemore's a clear candidate when he runs faster than the sportswriters ... probably Webster and RDLR could repeat in this category. I guess my money's on Barnes to throw a few good innings with a strong fastball and get everyone all lathered up about how he could help this year. Although Cecchini's a dark horse to put up an outrageous BA and get the media hyping up a totally illusory Cecchini/WMB competition (at least illusory this year).
Fun times. Baseball is such a great sport.
