BU is offering a free Sabermetrics 101 course online this summer: www.edx.org/course/bux/bux-sabr101x-sabermetrics-101-1558I've had the chance to meet Andy Andres before through a mutual friend, and he was a smart guy who knew his stuff. The mutual friend met him by auditing the course and he said it was great. Andy will be doing this class with contributions from Dan Brooks from BrooksBaseball as well, who'll be helping out on the data end. I just signed up and I'm looking forward to it. Figured I'd pass word along.

I signed up a few weeks ago! I'm just going to audit it.

Hey Chris, are you taking this? It's quite ..... involved.
Doesn't help that my last statistics class was 25 years ago.

Yes, but honestly haven't had a chance to look at it yet because I'm in the middle of a job search. Long story. Hoping to catch up this weekend. Had to unenroll from the certificate thing because I can't justify blocking much time out for this right now.

Ah, good luck to you on that.
There seems to be quite a bit of material. It starts right after rounders moved from England to the US, slight exaggeration.
edit - strike that. It's not an exaggeration. I'm learning about how Henry Chadwick recorded box scores in 1856. It's kinda interesting but not very useful.

I'm taking it. Completed the first week modules and am about halfway through week two. Nothing too interesting so far -- and I'd really prefer to not be wasting time doing measures of central tendency problems -- but I'm looking forward to seeing how in-depth they get with the MySQL sandbox. The x2 speed feature on the lectures is very clutch, BTW.

Just finished the course. What'd you guys end up thinking of it?

A little too much history. I mean I love history of baseball, but it got really really long. I'm not sure how much I'll use a lot of it because I don't see myself becoming another Eric, but I do know a hell of a lot more than I did and the SQL will be helpful at times in my job (in IT).

Disappointed that I wasn't able to participate due to off-field issues. Will we retain access to the materials after the course ends?

Yeah, that last history module was particularly brutal. Also, I didn't learn too much for the statistics and sabermetric tracks, although considering it's a 101 class, I shouldn't really have expected to. But the main reason I took it -- for SQL and R -- turned out to be a pretty worthwhile experience. R isn't much fun -- it reminds me of using STATA in econometrics class in college, but I enjoyed picking up the basics of SQL.

I missed part of lesson 5 and all of lesson 6. I planned on getting through it Friday but it was cut off in the morning. So I wound up with an 86. I plan on doing the rest soon.

I'm actually one of two course coordinators for this year. We've worked pretty hard to rework the course based on feedback, especially the second half - we've added in units on pitching and defense (last year's course was hitting heavy) and the R instruction has been redone from scratch. There's still the history there, but if you're just auditing you can always skip around. We're also hoping to run a Sabermetrics 201 class later this year which might appeal more to those on the board with a bit more basic knowledge. Hope you guys enjoy the course!

Oh cool. I might hop on that. No unforeseen job search to get in the way this year.
