Lester is really, really struggling with his command tonight. Just isn't hitting the corners and has missed down the heart of the plate a half-dozen times. Looks like the heat is getting to him-- he's sweating profusely and his face is seriously flushed. his last few starts have been sub par

It's presumably because Farrell didn't want the roster to be too left-handed. Without Gomes in the lineup, the only righties in the lineup are Bogaerts and Pedroia, who are clumped together at 2nd/3rd (there's also Ross, who doesn't really count because he sucks at hitting). But that's dumb logic-- if they put in a LOOGY, you can pinch-hit Gomes, and stacking the lineup with the platoon advantage is more valuable than the L/R alternating. Yeah, that makes zero sense -- as you mention, Gomes can PH at any time. Give Nava, our second best hitter last year vs. RHP, a chance to contribute. There's no better option.

If Lester can't even make contact with those Harang pitches over the middle of the plate, we might as well just accept that he's gonna go hitless for his career.

I think Lester just whiffed on ball four. When you get ahead 3-1 and you're 0/32 or whatever, you just have to take the next two pitches even if they're right down the middle.

The ball he whiffed on was right over the middle of the plate -- maybe a tick on the outside half. I disagree on him needing to not swing just because he got ahead. Harang isn't a wild pitcher and his control has been on point tonight. He's not going to walk Lester.

Huge shutdown inning from Lester there, and saves the bullpen a little bit. That puts him at 111 pitches -- I wonder if Farrell will allow him to start the 7th? Tell you the truth, even with the Heyward home run, Freeman's triple, and Lester's wildness, I'd much rather let him face them again than bring in Breslow.

Maybe it was because the catcher didn't try to frame it at all, but I thought it had at least a decent chance of being called a ball.

It was closer to the middle than the corner. Gameday logged the pitch as a 92 MPH 2-seamer.

Sizemore whipping up an RBI vs. a lefty? I'll take it.
Simmons is just otherworldly at SS. That arm alone is insane.

Wow, intentionally walking Ross to pitch to Bradley? Make 'em pay, Jackie.
ADD: I'm calling a bases-loaded walk, here.

Huge, huge hit from JBJ! Off a LHP no less. That gives him only his second multi-hit game of the month (May 10). Really hope he gets going at the plate.
Beautiful to see this team stringing together some offense.

As bad as JBJ has been at the plate, he has been a winning ball player his entire life. I'd continue to run him out there.
