Fantastic catch by Gomes! That wasn't even one of his "let me get a terrible break and/or run a circular route to make the play look notable" jobs.

Yeah, all bow to JF's genius. I retract my bitching earlier. That was ridiculous.

Oof. Workman up and Uehara still no where to be found. Something must be wrong. ADD: Phew!

I was pretty scared myself -- Don and Steve seemed pretty concerned momentarily. When does Koji usually get up and start throwing in the pen? Didn't look like he got up until there were already 2 outs, and Ross had a 3-pitch AB. I know he doesn't need long, but still, that strikes me as a rather quick warmup.

I think shaving the beards did it. Like to know what part of shaving has taken a toll on Miller's velocity this season. Today for instance, he threw 1 pitch over 93mph (95) and haven't noticed and gun readings at 97+ all year. Last season, before he got hurt would see some 97-99 readings. Sure, his slurve is getting over more often, but that velocity seems to be gone.

The Boston cheers--nice attendance-- outdid the chop canned music.
So the Braves lose two to a club on a dreadful streak? Maybe Lackey will handle them as well in Fenway where I think they'll be free-swinging for the wall.

We should play ATL more often.

Sure, his slurve is getting over more often, but that velocity seems to be gone. I don't think it's as pronounced as you think. Pitch F/x has his average fastball velocity at 93.8 MPH this season, slightly down from 94.3 last year. Note that in that span his BB% has decreased from 12.6% to 7.4%, and his K% has climbed from 23% to 29.5%. That slight drop in velocity seems to be being traded for much sharper command, making him far more consistent while being just about as electric as always. Fantastic game tonight. Good showing all-around, aside from some sloppy command from Lester. He really didn't have it, and seemed to be taking his frustration out on the ump whenever possible. He battled though, and it was good enough.

After tonight's outing, Uehara actually has a lower ERA, FIP, and xFIP this year than he did last year. Wowza.

Fangraphs actually has Miller at 93.8 from 94.9 last season, which was why brought it up. Miller would seem to come in some games and almost "sit" above 96 an inning it seemed.
Agreed the drop in velocity could be him exchanging that for control, same with his Slurve. Fangraphs shows it down 3/4 of a mph from 85.5-84.8.

That 94.9 figure you're seeing is from Baseball Info Solutions. I tend to stick with Pitch F/x data, but both work. That higher BIS velocity is because it's including his two-seamer (if he actually throws one and it isn't just a classification error), as pitch F/x has that pitch velocity going from 94.8 in 2013 to 93.6 this season (so a larger change than his 4-seamer). Regardless, even if he doesn't ramp it up to 95+ as frequently as he used to, he stills serves as a lethal fireballer from the left side. He truly is our second-filthiest option out of the pen.

Gordon owes Lester an apology..
He forgets about a guy Adam Dunn once labeled as "The one AB you MUST watch" in Danial Cabrera.. 32PA, 26AB, 0H, 24K, 2bb. Cabrera, for those who remember his days as A national, swung the bat nearly straight down at the ball. he had no clue. lester at least flails away with a half level swing.

In Daniel Cabrera's defense, he couldn't really pitch either.

In Daniel Cabrera's defense, he couldn't really pitch either. Cabrera had lots of titles. In Pedroia's rookie season, after Cabrera had been ejected and had already hit 2 Sox batters, tempers flared, Cabrera still mouthing off during his exit from the game.. Some may recall Pedroia naming him in the media even at the time as "The worst pitcher in the game". Strong words from a rookie no less that must have happened from a guy who said something pretty uncalled for on their way off of the mound.

I give Sizemore maybe 25 more PA's before something really should be done. We are halfway there so here's an update: 13 PA 1 Single 3 Doubles 1 Triple 2 Flyouts 4 Groundouts (1 GIDP, 2 RBI) 2 Strikeouts 1 Stolen Base That's a .909 SLG (everyone's favourite stat, right?)

I had read in the past that Kemp is having what is likely permanent issues with acceleration. His ankles apparently aren't as good as was assumed and his range is severely limited. also this: Peter Gammons ?@pgammo 13m If Carl Crawford's ankle is as bad as it seems, the Puig-Ethier(.351 since April 26)-Kemp outfield becomes the daily brew

I don't want Kemp or Ethier at those prices. Not even sure I want Cargo any more at 16, 17 and 20m from 2015-17. The guy who fits our needs a LH bat and he switch-hits is Melky Cabrera. Maybe, we can get him for a Victorino like contract. The Biogenesis guys seem to have figured it out; Melky, Braun, N.Cruz and Peralta. None are struggling.
