5/29 ML Gameday Thread: Morning start for the Sea Dogs

Another 0 spot for Mookie today, who is batting .212 in his last 10 games.
Of course, only the great Mookie Betts can make a little slump look good. Still sporting an OBP north of .400 in that span with 11 walks to 3 K's.

Thanks for the research Scotty. I was wondering all day what his obp was during this slump.
There will be a little something extra in your check this week. That's just the kinda guy I am.

I'd be happy for Couch if he got traded. He can't do much more to earn a shot at Pawtucket then Boston but I doubt if that will ever happen. He could be a fifth starter on a second division team. Maybe Hernandez as well. I think Couch will get his chance in Pawtucket. He may eventually end up as a Badenhop-esque reliever, though. Hernandez doesn't have the control or the pitching arsenal to move to the majors (last night notwithstanding), IMO. I don't agree. I'd like to see him with at least an average mlb d behind him before I gave up. It might be efficient to have a long term long man lefty specialist combo on the roster.

I'd be happy for Couch if he got traded. He can't do much more to earn a shot at Pawtucket then Boston but I doubt if that will ever happen. He could be a fifth starter on a second division team. Maybe Hernandez as well. Noe gave up a run in the ninth but Dogs held on to win 2-1. Amazing ending, runner on first, line shot to left. Runner fell down trying to score, got in a rundown and was tagged out. Batter seeing the runner going back to third, put on the breaks, fell down trying to get back to second and he was tagged out as well. Yes it was an amazing ending. I was at the game a few rows up from third base. Noe had given up two hard hits and a run in the 9th. When the next batter hit a screamer to the LF corner, it certainly looked like the runner was going to score from first. Then he somehow took an awkward step 1/3 of the way to home, seemed to recover, stumbled again and fell about half way to home. Even at that it was almost a bang/bang play on his dive back to third. Then Gibson, the third baseman, without hesitation, threw to second to just barely nab that runner on his dive back to the bag. This all happened so fast that the crowd took a second to understand what had just occurred. What an ending! So improbable! The Sea Dogs snatched victory from the jaws of what seemed like an impending defeat (or at least a tie). Owens pitched very well. He allowed two solid hits and a bleeder when he was late covering first on a grounder wide of 1B. His FB velocity was solidly at 90-91 for the game with one at 92 and a smattering at 89. As I recall all his strikeouts were on off-speed....which I believed to be his change. ...in the 76-79 range. To me he used very few curves in the 70-72 range. Last year his curve seemed more loopy at 67-68. His two walks occurred on 3-2 counts and he seemed to have much better command than I recalled from last year. Mookie had a tough day. Three pop-ups and a called strike-out. Marrero made a fantastic play diving to his left, sitting up and throwing out the runner from that position (Vargas). Vargas was hitting .320 with 8 hrs and was the Twins 20th rated prospect according to the scoreboard note. He is a big, SHing1B who affected an entitled look. While other players jogged off the field at innings end, he would slowly shuffle. On several ground outs he jogged at molasses pace to first and was out by 6 steps.... Good stuff, thanks. Just a note for interest, Vargas is the guy Big Papi has taken a liking to. From the left, his swing is just like Papi's. Papi has become his off season mentor and the two text back and forth. He also says that Vargas is a far better hitter than he was at that age. Baseball rarity. Cecchini has a double and Shaw has a walk and strikeout. In the same (single) game.

Rubby scratched in Pawtucket and Ranaudo has bags packed. So it seems like it's one of them for Buchholz Edit: Word out of McCoy is RDLR has been pushed back a few days. To Saturday? Postgame Farrell said it would be RDLR. Not sure why Ranaudo would have his bags packed, wishful thinking ?

True and that's a big source of info for me, love it, a new dimension.
In this particular case I saw it in a post by OnBase at another site. MLB.TV doesn't do post games.
Also, I almost never read twitter until after the games are no longer on. Info overload (follow 85 and none are players (except Westmoreland)).

Portland Sea Dogs ?@portlandseadogs 12m Hey fans, look for the Game-Ending DP on @sportscenter's Top Ten this morning!!! #WeMadeIt #NumberSix #SeaDogsBaseball Your note on Vargas was interesting. Subliminally I noted that he looked a lot like David. He is very large and on the heavy side. His mannerisms at the plate look similar (without the hand spit and clap). He does give off an attitude that he is just too good for this level. His hit off Noe in the ninth was a bullet line drive a fraction from he left-center field wall. For 90% of people it would have been a double but he cruised into first with no thought of extending it. His effort level is way below the norm (not making any comparison to Papi here). I was surprised that he was rated #20 in their system...and figured he must be slowly progressing through the levels. BTW, Swihart has grown a beard and it makes him look older. He looks more filled out too. But he is fast...almost beating out an infield grounder. Coyle looks like his calves belong to Joe Bellino. Shorter than Mookie and stockier than Pedroia he swings with Pedey's menace.

Agree with all that and just for fill in info, Asuaje is built like Coyle, Rijo is built like Mookie. Witte is a big boy (solid) , Ball is skinnier than Owens used to be, Margot is going to look very solidly athletic and the one that intrigues me is Weems. A tall skinny catcher but the two sided tools are there (he's off to a bad start though).
Haven't seen Salem, they don't broadcast and I haven't seen any opponents broadcasting either.

I suppose a 2 game sample is too small, but it would seem that Owens backing off on the SO is true both for a) the last 2 games relative to earlier this season and b) this season versus 2013 & 12. His K/9 in 2012 was 11.5, 2013 11.2 (a phenomenal 13.65 for the 6 games in AA) and this year dropping to a mere 9.5 Again, small sample alert, 7.07 SO/9 for the last 2 games (11 SO in 14 IP, versus 16 SO in 8 IP the 2 games before that, per Owens comment). I suppose it is amusing that pitching to contact for Owens means lowering his SO/9 to just under 10, but this has also manifest in his games with 6 IP+. Last year he had 7 games with 6IP or more, 2 of 7 IP or more over 26 games. This year he already has in 11 games to date, 7 of 6+ IP, and 3 of 7+

During the no hitter run one of them said in reference to the strikeouts, "He's been working on pitching to contact but the batters aren't cooperating." I'm thinking it's a bi-product of SSS command improvement which will hopefully stay. It's easier to pitch to contact when the ball is going where you want it to go.

Or maybe it's that he's 20 yrs old and has moved up to AA. Those guys might be a tad better at making contact. They should be anyway.
