I wonder if Holt sticks at first until Napoli comes off the DL. I hope not. I love Brock Holt but 1B is the one and only position where he will not provide enough excess defensive value to justify playing him over Mike Carp, who remains the better batter. Holt has more HR than Carp.

Is Carp hurt? I don't see why they would put Holt at 1st unless something is wrong with Carp. Has Holt ever played 1st in his entire career? Couldn't they have called up Nava for one game. Something is up.

Something is up. I think they're mostly just riding the hotter hand, plus Carp's battling a minor foot injury. Brock's been a solid leadoff hitter and there's not anyone else you'd really want to slide in there today without bungling the middle of the order. Also, the Sox have made it known they want Holt to get some exposure at 1B and the OF with Drew's return imminent, so why not today? And perhaps more than anything, Carp and Nava both have OPS's below .400 vs. LHP. There's no reason to want them in there today. EDIT: But it is worth asking if Carp should be in there over Herrera, with Holt sliding back to third. Herrera has been substantially below average hitter his whole career against lefties, but considering Carp and Nava's have sucked too, and the injuries to Nap and Shanf, we pretty much need to run out a black hole or two any time we face LHP's until they're activated (Napoli should return next Sunday).

The same could be said about playing Johnny Gomes against righties when Nava was still up. But there's that gutty grittiness that, you know, has to be factored when he whiffs or miss-judges a ball that Nava would track down.

With another two or three hitless AB's vs. a RHP, Gomes wRC+ against right-handers will be below Nava's.

Now this is fun for those that like the theater of the absurd. Farrell is either smoking some bad weed, wants to stick it to Lester, or believes a bunch of pigeons could beat Bedard. The ghost of Lou Clinton would be better in right than Hassan, and in spite of his issues, Nava would be better playing both right and first base. This is not a knock on Farrell. He has made this game interesting.

I totally understand why Lester gets so pissed about the strike zone. I'm always frustrated for him.

This umpire deserves to get punched in the throat.

Hassan got screwed on the 2nd strike, but you can't look at 3 straight called strikes with the bases loaded.

Not sure how you look at that one with two strikes, Alex. Esp with bases juiced.

...until Middlebrooks is back healthy, at which point they'll reassess. That makes sense to me.

Gee, what a surprise Hassan ks with bases juice. Clinton's ghost could do that.

This is kind of misleading. If you read the actual quote, Farrell pretty much telegraphs that Drew will start every day for now, but that when Middlebrooks is healthy, Bogaerts will move to SS versus lefties and Will will start at 3B.

And this just burns my onions. You call up one of the best OBP guys in the system, who dominates lefties, and then you start the human ground-out/designated bunter.
I mean really.

Dustin's tossed and it leads to Cecchini's MLB debut? OK!
