I really don't care that Bradley isn't hitting. He makes tough plays in cf look easy.

The Red Sox have not lost a game since Mookie was called up.

Team might be awful, but they at least need to beat the Yankees so they don't make the PO either.

Nice win. Big clutch HR by Napoli. The win doesn't do much for the Red Sox, but it's nice to see the Yankees lose. There's nothing else to root for than hoping the Yankees fail to make the post-season, although I have a feeling they'll wind up in 1st place, negative run differential and all.
It's nice to see Lester get rewarded with a win for his sturdy pitching and Uehara come away with another clean dominating save.
I'd miss that if they weren't around in 2015. The Lester/Uehara tandem is certainly still an enjoyable aspect of an unenjoyable 2014 team.

Random thoughts ...
-- Loved hearing the Fox crew correctly excoriate the Drew signing.
-- Reynolds' Ted Williams rap may have been the most wrong thing I've ever heard on TV (and, yes, I've see Ann Coulter, so that's saying a lot). Williams essentially was the first guy on the planet to figure out the value of OBP and think in those terms instead of BA.
-- Farrell said that they have "five guys for four positions," which apparently means Nava, JBJ, Betts, Holt, and Bogaerts, which means Stephen Drew plays every day at SS. The problem with that, of course, is that the lineup with all five guys (including Xander at SS, and with Gomes for Nava vs. LHP) is usually going to be better than any lineup with Drew at SS, and to the degree that a Drew lineup might be marginally better, it's not worth the disruption of playing X at 3B.
Really, when Mike Carp comes off the DL, the roster move should be to trade Drew. That's painfully obvious. I suppose I can live with their trying to see if Drew can actually make another base hit before then, in order to increase his trade value.
-- I sure hope the Peavy start Monday is a showcase for trade partners, and that RDLR has been promised a recall in 10 days.

Why isn't Drew wearing his glasses?. He's not eating his Wheaties either.

If the Sox do not resign Lester, they are aholes. The dude is smart and a competitor. Throw away the age crap and value contracts, they will not replace him. It takes time and bumps for most pitchers to develop and it is a constant process. Lester has jumped over the hoops.

Not getting locked into long term contracts gives them the flexibility to sign short term free agents like Drew, Gomes, Victorino, Dempster, Mujica and Pierzynski so they can avoid getting stuck with dead money.
and in fairness, Uehara and Napoli.

Lester's trade value is also pretty high in my opinion.

On WEEI this morning Buckley said that as the press gathered around Lester in the locker room after the game. Someone yelled maybe you'll get 85 now!

Congrats to Lester for spinning a tremendous game last night. The slider was working really well last night.
Big time players come up huge in big games, and we needed that game big time.

What are you talking about? We were off Thursday. No excuse for that performance last night. To quote our buddy Temple; "GUTLESS." We like to blame everyone but the players. Why don't we blame them once in a while? Not the guy who signed them. He! He! I am now officially out of excuses real and imaginary for the 3 hit debacle against Nuno.

Nice article, and again, Lester is a real "stand up guy" and probably smarter than Henry thinks he is. It comes again to market value, Henry believes he know his value, and the market is over exaggerated, but there is a market. Lester, as much as he wants to stay, is not going to do something that diminishes the market for pitchers like him, like it or not. Henry does not get that. He is too happy on his yacht. Someone will spend big bucks, and it will not be the Sox. Enjoy Lester while you can.

Someone will spend big bucks, and it will not be the Sox. Enjoy Lester while you can. Its not that Henry is not smart or doesn't think he is smart man. He just doesn't want to pay huge bucks to an over 30 pitcher when pitching is the strength of our system. That makes perfect sense. Henry is incredibly intelligent, and we are lucky to have him as owner. We have no right to complain abour our team underspending. You seriously think overpaying ellsbury would have made a difference? Look at the Drew signing. Very few teams would have signed him like we did. If anything they are closer to recklessly overspending than underspending. The more awkward this Lester thing gets, the more likely he gets traded in my opinion. The fact we are leaving peavy in the rotation is kinda showing me, I think, the Sox are probably trying to showcase him and maybe lester at the trade deadline. Peavy's 85 million comment to me, says he probably knows he wont be around too much longer and is just saying what he thinks. It also sounds kind of absurd he is acting like 85 million is not a lot of money.

I think it's disingenuous to lump every 30+ pitcher into the same category. First, if the contract is 5 years. It's Lester's 31-35 years. He is well conditioned. Has no injury history. I doubt if there's going to be much of a fall-off for 3-4 years. Since we're talking cycles. Someone should remind Mr.Henry that this will be the 4th time in 5 years we miss the playoffs. The pitcher Jon is most often compared to is Andy Pettite. His 31-35 years were from 03-07. For 4 of the years he was the same old Pettite. Had one off year 04 with some injury issues. I know all about Henry's study. I also can make a long list of pitchers who helped teams win championships between the ages of 31-35. www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pettian01.shtml
