Wow nice play by holt. Rubby walked the world, but lasted a full 7 innings. A win is a win! Ortiz looking old! How many more games until he gets his timing back. I was thinking the same thing regarding Ortiz, do you guys think his bat speed has slowed down? His 250 average is killing us.

Random thought: Rubby is kind of what I think Owens projects to be right now. A guy with an elite changeup, a fastball that gets swings-and-misses but has command issues, and a fringy third pitch. Projects to be a three, but the ceiling of a two if the command improves.

Vazquez may have actually picked off the runner at 2nd... very close play in any case. Starting to think he may be clearly superior to David Ross at this point, though I'll need a few more pitch framing numbers to be sure of course. He was almost certainly out at 2nd -- I got lucky and happened to freeze-frame the last replay just right. The last pitch of the top of the 4th was pitch-framing porn. Caught a low "strike" with fingers up, pulled it up into the zone, got the call. The pitch was low enough that his hand was almost above the ball as he caught it. I'd love to know what the record is for most consecutive games without a SB attempt versus a rookie catcher at the start of his career. Given the guys he's caught so far, you would have expected 3 already, based on rates with AJP and Ross behind the plate.

Vazquez defense is already mlb ready.
If he can keep chipping in with some offense, we should be in good shdpe behind the dish.

If things break the right way maybe he can win a couple World Series in Boston and then go to New York for a leisurely retirement just like Lester.

I was thinking the same thing regarding Ortiz, do you guys think his bat speed has slowed down? His 250 average is killing us. Got a couple of numbers for you which give reason for optimism: 2014 BABIP: .253 Career BABIP: .302 2014 wCH/C: -0.65 (changeup runs above average per 100 innings) career wCH/C: 1.36 His LD% is down this year as well as his performance vs fastballs (slightly). But unless he's cheating on fastballs, making him susceptible to changeups - or his LD% is completely responsible for his drop in BABIP (seems unlikely with only ~2% drop) it appears he may be in line for a bounce-back. Not sure if the scouting backs this up.

If you're assuming that everyone knows what "wCH/C" means, you're wrong.

Anyone know where I can find the highlight of JBJs double play last night?
So pissed I missed it.
And if this kid doesn't win the Gold Glove in the OF, somethings wrong with the league. I don't care if he is a rookie. It's pretty exciting to have two prospects who can make such a huge impact with their defense alone already.

Unlike some on the board like Jmie, I am not a pitching technician and savant, but even a dummy like me can appreciate Ruddy. He is "cool", does not wilt under pressure and has confidence in his abilities. He was a top prospect with the Dodgers on the rise before his injury, and has experienced success. Then some tough times followed, but he survived. I guess you can say he has true grit. Some say he needs to develop an effective third pitch . If so, that can taught but not the toughness he seems to have.
Holt ( and Nava) is somewhat like this. Some say Holt will "regress to the mean", whatever that means. In his case, it could mean about 280 or so, not bad. Regardless, he will a valuable member of any team. Personally, I like the way he makes contact and seems to know what he is doing at the plate.

Kerwin Danley behind the plate today. The strike zone will be optional, and it will vary from inning to inning, if not batter to batter.

Carp over Napoli a day after he homers. I hope someone is scouting carp and he's playing to increase his trade value, if not I'm confused.

Ortiz has been killing us, he has been hitting into a lot of double plays this season. Seems like he is trying to pull the ball. David could use a day off.

That was heads-up base running all the way by Holt.

Starting to think if this team is going to make a run, they may need to get Ortiz out of the cleanup spot. Go back and read the post about his batting average on balls put into play. The likely explanation is just that. Even now his OPS is one of the highest on the team. Don't see any reason for the team to gut their lineup that way. Coming to you from the great northwest
