Anybody else think the Cespedes trade has at least something to do with giving the average fan who only cares about wins and knows very little about the farm and financial considerations that go into building a team a "name" in return for Jon Lester? If we did trade him for Joc Pederson most of us would've been ecstatic but more than 90% of the fan base has no idea who he is and thus would've been disappointed, the reigning homerun derby champ on the other hand... I was convinced the Kamp talk was basically the equivalent of Mike Lowell in the Beckett deal (a salary dump at the time) and that we'd need to take him in order to get one of the holy trinity from them but apparently he was the target. This board wouldn't have been happy with that at all. I wrote last Sunday that Kemp deal even up for Lester with LA paying 50% of Kemp's salary would have been an excellent deal for the Sox. Kemp has gone on a crazy hot streak since then. From a probability standpoint, its unlikely Pederson will ever be Cespedes. I think you really need to consider Beane's comment when he traded Addison Russell that the value of current major league talent has been discounted. What he was saying is that we are overvaluing prospects. That has been my belief for the past few years and has made me EXTREMELY unpopular on this website. The headline from yesterday is that the teams seem to agree that the search for prospects at the cost of premium MLB talent has gotten out of hand. The other way you can look at it is that Beane got screwed and teams value prospects more than ever given that almost none got traded yesterday.

So I'm not sure which thread it was written in so I'm putting this hear. Jmei, remember when you wrote about there being no greater risk to Cliff Lee being injured because he's been so healthy over his career even though he's old and had what you described as a minor elbow injury this season? Yea about that... Bronson Aroyo too.

I know I'm late to the party, but I do want to comment on Oilcan's comments. The fact that the Pirates refused to trade a top SIX prospect to rent a top of the rotation arm with a winning playoff track record while they're trying to make a strong playoff run should be proof enough. This signals to me that they're an example of one organization who is "over-valuing" their own prospects. Beane didn't have the prospects that Ben Cherington liked. If he Ben preferred prospects, he would have gone to another organization. Beane's trump card was providing Cherington with a power-hitting, rangy left fielder with a canon arm who is in the prime of his career. I understand the Red Sox only control him for another year, but they have the financial flexibility to retain Cespedes services. I mean, the Cardinals weren't willing to give up any prospect of significance for Lackey, so the Red Sox got creative and took a reclamation project and a young 4th starter. Prospects have more value now than they ever did. Especially now that the steroid era is over.
