Jeff Passan @jeffpassan · 43s Source: Boston also getting a competitive balance draft pick from Oakland. Boston will send cash to the A's. That's better.

Cespedes is signed for $10.5mm this year and next year and is then arb eligible for the next two years. Cespedes is 28YO (in other words, we have control until he is 31YO). Cespedes is signed for $10.5m in 2015 and then becomes a free agent. Hopefully Oakland also throws in another prospect or two. This the rub - Cots (and contemporaneous reports) says his contract makes him a FA after 2015 (i.e., there is an agreement not to offer arbitration). I assume that is allowed under the CBA (there is no ability to agree to not make an QO, however). Miami likes Cuban players, right?

Were getting prime Cespedes and a comp pick. This is a good return.

Pretty good defensive LF right?
Slugger who can play the field and who we control through his prime years. The OBA is nothing to write home about but frankly it's tough to wrap my head around the league-wide reduced offensive output.

He is a free agent after 2015. He has a clause in his contract which allows it. Cot's is correct. BR is not. My apologies.

Meh, .737 OPS last year .767 OPS this year...about a .750 OPS over his last 900 at bats. Not all that exciting, we'll still suck next year. Why are you conveniently leaving out the .861 OPS in his rookie year?

Better than not trading him, I just think Cespedes is more hype than he has performed so far. No one will be running with him and JBJ in OF. It's good because there is clearly a market inefficiency in the outfield this offseason. Plus I am pretty confident I will still not be able to spell Cespedes name correctly by the end of the week. I am 0-3 with looking it up so far.

Red Sox will have boatloads of money to spend in 2015, not worried about resigning him right now. Anyone that complains about this is out of their minds.

Baseball Reference shows arb eligible in 16 and 17 and a free agent in 18 for what it's worth. If it's three years of control for a mostly full time OF with some power plus a 2nd round comp pick that's a solid return for a two month rental. Plus we don't have to watch Gomes field anymore.
Edit: Nevermind BR then. Still solid deal but would have liked a low level lotto ticket added.

Beane just knows how to make deals happen. Thought there was no way Oakland would be a legit player in this game.

We're flipping him to someone else, right? IMO he's very overrated.

Sox get a talented MLBer with 3+ yrs of control for 2 months of Jonny Gomes and lester along with getting the 2nd pick in comp round B. Gotta love it.

He does fit pretty well. An extention would make him a decent contributor in Fenway. Something he may well be amenable to. He is a power bat and his defense is good. Overall he can play. If they can extend him reasonably I like this deal. If not it's underwhelming. I'd rather look at it as a longer term project though for a guy they think they could extend.

Instant reaction: don't love it. I really like Cespedes and think moving from the Colosseum to Fenway will help him a lot. He hits a ton of IFFBs that will be foul balls in Fenway rather than outs, and the Monster will help him on defense (his routes are less than ideal at times, but that'll be hidden in Fenway, and his arm will be a huge weapon on guys who try for wall-ball doubles). But that one year of team control hurts.

We can always QO cespedes next year. Pretty good return. Not awesome, but Cespedes + comp pick is better than just the comp pick for lester.

Only 1+ years of control, but we can extend him, offer him a QO or trade him (hello, Stanton!)

Ok, can someone who is very close to the situation clarify whether or not he will be a FA after next year or not? I see different sources and different posters all saying something different. Can we get a 100% definite on his contract situation?
