I get that aspect of it. It's pretty clear what they are doing here, if they think this year was an injury riddled or off year for Craig and he can return to form it's a good deal. Otherwise, it's just selling off a great asset for the sake of forcing a team to be a competing team when they should be rebuilding.
Not that it's that surprise. That's want 95% of the fans want. They want the Red Sox competing every year, so these are the trades they get. I liked the Cespedes one as long as we make an effort to sign a starter int he offseason. I don't like this one. Craig has just been so bad this year.

How is John Lackey a clearly more valuable pitcher in 2015 than Joe Kelly in 2015-2018?

I really like Allen Craig for reasons described here. But this is a very disappointing package.

Craig wears #21 for STL. It will be interesting to see if the Sox let him have that number in Boston.

Hard to know what to make of Kelly - career ERA 3.25, FIP 4.00

Cespedes, Victorino, Craig and Napoli = 4 guys for 3 positions, all right handed. yes, and they're obviously not going to keep all of them, unless they're really concerned about Victorino

LOL at the Craig hate. No MLB player ever gets hurt. Is there a Sox site where the posters are sane?

The nice thing about Kelly is that he is more of a GB pitcher than Lackey, which will be good for Fenway.

Right now, without further moves you would have to go Craig in LF, Bradley in CF, Cespedes in RF, Victorino all over the joint to keep him healthy and Napoli at first.
But it's pretty clear someone is going to be moved. I wouldn't hate a Victorino trade.

I actually am gaining confidence in Ben, now. Big flip HAS to be coming. These parts don't even make a camel never mind a race horse. Does that ever happen on deadline day -- assemble parts in the morning, package and flip them in the afternoon?

Dan Shulman @dshulman_ESPN · 16m If #redsox indeed got Kelly, Craig back from #cards, they did well. I'd bet news eventually comes out that Craig's foot injury….
Dan Shulman @dshulman_ESPN · 16m …from last season is still bothering him. The guy has 2 years of rock solid production. He can hit.

Jeff Passan ?@jeffpassan 1m Red Sox are sending around $1.75M to the Cardinals. Final trade: John Lackey and ~$1.75M to St. Louis for Allen Craig and Joe Kelly. I guess that means no minor leaguer, then.

?@craigcalcaterra 2m I will say, though, I'd rather gamble on John Lackey in the NL than Joe Kelly in the AL East.

Quick someone take the keys away from Ben before he trades Miller to the Braves for the wrong Upton.

Kelly is not good, and his WHIP makes me sick to my stomach. How is he an upgrade over the AAA guys? And how is Craig an upgrade over Nava, who was already looking like a bench player with Cespedes on the team?

I don't mind the whole buying low on Craig, but the reason I don't like this deal is because they didn't get much if he never recovers form and we are giving up an above average starter who is signed for League Min next year (even if he says he will retire rather than play for that, which is BS imo). That has value.
I'd have rather gotten a prospect along with Craig than Joe Kelly.

And how is Craig an upgrade over Nava, who was already looking like a bench player with Cespedes on the team? I think Kelly is going to end up being the set-up man next year. My guess is that Craig is still hurt, will get surgery soon and will be ready to hit next year. Just a guess.

Six months ago I would have loved this trade. Now I feel a bit let down. Let's hope the future plays out closer to my winter outlook than my mid-summer one.

Allen Craig is basically a rich man's Napoli when healthy. Cherington is setting up the team to contend in '15. And people are complaining we're not hoarding middle tier prospects from these trades that might be average MLBers in 4 or 5 years? C'mon people.

Can someone direct me to a credible person in baseball who thinks this is a bad haul for the Sox? I'll hang up and listen.

I wonder if Lackey is telling teams he's not going to pitch for minimum in 2015, and that's what has (seemingly) driven his value down? Not to say I absolutely hate the move, it just makes more sense from that perspective.
