Everybody knows Nelson de la Rosa, but who is Karim Garcia?

Cafardo being Cafardo. The "source familiar with Japanese baseball" is probably someone from Maeda's camp. If Cafardo had a source from MLB, I think he'd describe his guy as "a ML source."
Lazy reporting by a lazy reporter.
I haven't read anything that indicates that Maeda is anywhere near the pitcher that Tanaka is/was. Heck, it might not cost us much more than that money (6 years/$120-$130 million)to get Lester back here.

Agree. Spend the $120M elsewhere.

Some excerpts:
Maeda finished the season with a 2.60 ERA (fifth in Nippon Professional Baseball) in 187 innings, with 161 strikeouts (7.7 K/9) and 41 walks (2.0 BB/9).
Maeda’s velocity was impressive, ranging from 90-94 mph and hitting 94 four times. In previous outings, he’s thrown anywhere from 87-94 mph, but he didn’t throw a fastball below 90 today and he spotted it well. Maeda pitched mostly off his four-seamer, though he mixed in a handful of two-seam fastballs.
His go-to secondary weapon is his 80-84 mph slider...a slightly-above average offering with tight spin and quick, late break, though he’s prone to hanging the pitch...He also threw an 85-86 mph changeup that flashed average with good tailing action that he used mostly against lefthanded hitters.
Also noted, he throws an average curve & cutter, & he has very good control. Like to pitch on the outer third of the plate.
That's the gist of the BA report. Personally, I saw him once and in that outing he looked like a #3 at best. Small sample, I know, but he didn't make me sit up and take notice like the times I saw Darvish and Tanaka.

Hard pass. He's got Owens' velo and secondary stuff doesn't project as plus either.

Not sure where the 6 year 120 million came from but that seems really high, I would guess he gets a lot less.

I thought with the deal of Miley they may consider jumping in on Maeda, but it seems like a lot of risk without even the perceived high end reward. Maybe the $ will show that, but with the may $ is being handed out, who the hell knows

You'd think this would be a little easier, since the posting fee is only $20M.

You'd think this would be a little easier, since the posting fee is only $20M. Which, I believe is refundable for those who don't get to negotiate with Maeda. No risk.

He should at least be an upgrade over Kelly/Wright.

It's pretty clear they really think they have something in Joe Kelly. I agree. And I don't think we should put Kelly and wright in the same sentence. I'm not saying Kelly will be excellent, just that it is possible. And with these bullpen moves and Miley trade it's apparent he will be a SP. DD does like his power arms. As for wright, I'm not convinced he will even make this team. And its probably a bad sign if he is in the rotation for more than a spot start. It's not really ideal to have your long man have zero options. I would bet the sox would move him for a modest return at this point.
