This is a really good interview with Dan Kantrovitz, Cardinals scouting director, on how St. Louis approaches drafting and developing young talent. In particular, there's tons of great discussion about how to value draft prospects (high-ceiling low-floor vs. high-floor low-ceiling) and the role of analytics in drafting and developing players. Had the pleasure of meeting Kantrovitz and hearing him speak at a Brown baseball function last winter. Has lots of interesting things to say when it comes to this stuff.

I was looking at the kids who are ranked for the draft I came across an article about Gio Brusca. Apparently the Sox made a call to him in round 5 to ask if he would sign if drafted. The kid was looking for money about 800k the same amount another kid got that I forget his name but the Sox would only go 400k. So they didn't draft him and instead the Braves grabbed him around 37th. He didn't sign anyway he is attending Pacific. It's interesting who they talk to around the draft. So this is someone to keep an eye on.

I figure it is about time to get one of these started. Someone to keep track of: Kiley McDaniel ?@kileymcd Heard today that TCU plans to move closer Riley Ferrell to Friday starter. Fringe first rounder as closer; up to 100 w/plus SL & some feel. Sounds like one of those guys who is drafted in June and playing the "young gun" role in October.

The Sox should take a long, hard look at Phil Bickford. Live arm, great measureables, highly competitive, and he will be there at #7.

Bickford is a Redsox fan. Went to a conservative Christian high school. I'm only bringing that up because a lot of such schools had drugs and alchohol testing programs throughout high school in this area. Every dance and major social function involves a drugs and alchohol test. It was a small school program in SoCAL but he was highly regarded and pitched well in major college last year: www.fullertontitans.com/sports/m-basebl/2013-14/bios/bickford_phil_ya45

His father grew up in Rockland, ME. A client showed me a article in the local Camden/Rockland paper after the last draft talking about this.

Bickford will most likely be picked up before #4 let alone 7. I think Walker Buehler is a more likely target

I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know what a bickford, as pictured, is....I was going tell you what it looked like ..........(also found aplenty in Maine), but then I saw the orange juice so I was ok.

BA posted its early top 50 ( sub required) Some nugets: Top 10 Its a very murky and shallow class at the top when compared to previous classes at this time in their respective years at least according to a scouting director quoted. The strength are College pitching and HS hitting, specially HS outfielders. HS pitching is down after being a strength last year.

“This has a chance to be the best group of high school outfielders we have seen in years,” an assistant scouting director said.
I think this is an intriguing class already with some players that will surely emerge over the next 6 months.

PG's WWBA Championship ("Jupiter") starts today (Thursday) and is basically the last big showcase of the year, though some guys (specially pitchers) skip it a lot of the high end guys will be there. As far as I've see guys like Rogers, Pummer, Russell, Betts among others will be there. Nor Allard nor Hooper will be there, which is understandable as they pitch deep into the summer (Allard pitched with team USA). On the position side I think Trenton Clark and Daz Cameron will be missing as well as both played really well for team USA.
This is a nice tournament for other guys to emerge as follows for the Spring. The draft is a long ways away but draft season is well underway.

Frankie Piliere @fpilierepg Ashe Russell looks razor sharp w/ his breaking ball. CB command sets him apart. Fastball at 90-93 w/ big life on the corners #PGTourney

Keith Law released his Top 30 prospects. Here are his top 10: 1. Brady Aiken, LHP, undecided/no school 2. Michael Matuella, RHP, Duke 3. Brendan Rodgers, SS, Lake Mary (Fla.) HS 4. Nathan Kirby, LHP, Virginia 5. Kolby Allard, LHP, San Clemente (Calif.) HS 6. Walker Bueller, RHP, Vanderbilt 7. Kyle Funkhouser, RHP, Louisville 8. Nick Plummer, OF, Brother Rice HS (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) 9. Dansby Swanson, SS, Vanderbilt 10. Alonzo Jones, OF, Columbus (Ga.) HS insider.espn.go.com/blog/mlb-draft/post?id=2128&ex_cid=InsiderTwitter_lawcrawfordtop30draftprospectsHis list varies quite a bit from Kiley McDaniel and BA's lists. Note that he has Hooper all the way down at #26, and Ashe Russell isn't listed. Obviously there will be a lot of movement between now and the draft but I thought the Fangraphs and BA lists were fairly similar.

What's the word on Daz Cameron? Thought he was a consensus top 10 pick.

What's the word on Daz Cameron? Thought he was a consensus top 10 pick. Well he isn't now He "peaked" early and probably got a bit overhyped as the next Justin Upton etc. it's a long draft season ahead of us so we'll see how he develops. From what I have read he didn't impact the ball during the summer though he was very good for team USA, though overshadowed by Trenton Clark. Edit: I saw somewhere else that Mike Nikorak was 1th. I like it I thought he was the kind of arm who moves up in the spring, he one of the guys I had liked the most from the little I've read.

One more excerpt from Keith Law (because I saw this pitcher on the Cape and loved him so I actually think he could bust into the top 10 by May if not sooner):
15. Cody Ponce, RHP, Cal Poly Pomona A relative unknown coming into the summer, Ponce has seen his stock soar after hitting 97 mph in the Cape Cod All-Star game and showing a slider that flashes plus-plus from a clean delivery and a strong 6-5, 235-pound build.
