That's a pretty small glove Butler is using.

Good job by Wright so far, they had better give him more than mop-up duty before the season is over.

Sad when a Knuckler has better command and control than at least half of the starting rotation.

Wright's knuckleball is faster than Wake's was, in some cases by almost 10 MPH.

Not a lot of positives to take from this game, but one of them is that Wright seems to deserve a legit shot.

33 pitches for 3 innings. Can't wait for Wright to throw his first <100 pitch CG shutout in the majors.

Oh dear, only a 2.25 ERA for Wright... the horror!
Like his fielding though.

Expect a post shortly from Eric on Wright. He may be right about Wright.

if the Sox go back to 12 pitchers, who goes down and who comes up? Betts, Cecchini, Hassan are possibilities.
They may stay with 13 pitchers for now and getting rid of CBrown, does that mean Craig is ready to play this week?
I would sign on to Wright getting the start on FRI.

With the starters they now have, they may need to carry 14 pitchers. Five for starters and at least nine in the pen for most the starters seem to go about five innings. They are still learning or trying to get back their mojo. Unless they rapidly progress these last six weeks or so and the spring, it looks the same for 2015. The ones who argued that it was ok to let Lester go did not take this into their calculations. Part of their argument was the great pitching prospects the Sox have even though the same people consistently point out the weakness of these prospects, even Owens. And good luck with getting free agents.
It will end up costing the Sox more to replace Lester than to meet his salutary demands, either in terms of prospects for a trade or paying out for good free agent pitchers, not the scrap heap variety.

You can't assign a DFA back to the majors can you?

we'll be waiting a long time, godot.
But we don't have to wait long for 9/1 callups, but we wait for the thread. -With 3 open spots on the 40-man, non-roster players on in the mix. (Verdugo, Ely, Spring as the #3 catcher - currently DL with sprained ankle.) -Ain't no particular reason to play the older players in the AAA playoffs. (Wright, Ely.) Ryan Roberts and Herrera on are the DL, unclear where they'll be at on 9/1.

You can't assign a DFA back to the majors can you? At this point, Corey Brown has to go through waivers, starts Monday afternoon at earliest, ends 48 hours later. Sox could get him back to BOS at that point. I say he gets claimed. Sox hardly need Brown with 3 lefty OF's.

Kelly choked today. De la rosa choked yesterday.
We need long relieve help if the starters are going to crumble on us.

Doo doo happens, tho they still should get several more starts before giving them a rest. Not sure what to make of the Sox using Wright just in long relief, yeah.. They needed someone for that, though over the course of the game? Few knuckleballers have had success in that role. They are going use him at all this year, might as well be starts, though I'd rather see Ranaudo and Workman round out the rotation.

Re multiple prior posts on Xander & Mujica:
I don't believe that Xander's move to third had much to do with his poor production. We've had three new guys be offensive busts this year....Perhaps this augers the arrival of a new 'Era of the Pitcher'. Just like Bradley & WMB, weaknesses have been exploited for X. We might well expect the same with whomever we next bring up (including Mookie). If these guys are going to ultimately succeed, they will have to adjust in MLB with extended playing time. How lucky that we can afford to do that in a lost season. Wins matter not, but getting experience does.
As to Mujica, he has not been reliable all year. With Miller gone (doing even better in Baltimore BTW), Farrell can use him to either find a solution to his problems, confirm that he is not part of the future, or help 'legitimately' tank some games by not going all-out. It's a win, win, win. Hear, hear!
