Interesting piece on Farrell's impressions of this year. For those of us who thought he used bunts and hit and runs too much, especially in April he trolls us all saying, in retrospect, he didn't do that enough: Boston has the third least SH's in the AL, 3 above the last place team. (Edit: they also just sac'ed ONCE in April.) Is this because they suck at bunting?

I hate bunting, but I can see, with this team, that Farrell has a point.
Also, once upon a time, when a player was in a slump, he would bunt. The idea was that bunting improved a player's view of the ball and helped to restore his timing. I don't know if that idea still is around, but there is merit to the concept.
Maybe all those guys at the bottom of the lineup should be bunting a lot more.

Maybe all those guys at the bottom of the lineup should be bunting a lot more. As much as I hate sacrifice bunting in all but the rarest situations (tie game, bottom of the 9th, man on 3rd, 1 our or fewer and really good bunter up - then maybe) I actually think not enough guys bunt for hits. Bradley, Mookie, Holt - and Ellsbury and Iglesias when they were with the Sox - don't/didn't take advantage of men playing regular depth against them and even slow-footed first basemen. Bunting down the first base line in particular is a dying art. If a guy has good wheels and is smart, bunting for a hit could be worth an extra 10 hits a year or so, not just in the bunts, but also by forcing some corner guys to cheating in on the hitter who has a bunt for a hit reputation and who get burned by being out of position when the hitter slaps what would be a routine grounder by them.

Since july 23rd Pedroia leads the AL in batting average (356) so much for the decline. Dustin will be fine!

Middlebrooks injured again? what a shock. Hamstring. I'd take JJ Hardy at 3B next year, or Kung Fu Panada.

Ridiculous that Mookie didn't get an error on the diving play he missed that allowed a triple.
Not only does superior defense save runs, it saves pitches, sometimes stressful ones.

That's true, but the guy he replaced had a 60 WRC+. Sometimes you need to sacrifice defense for offense. I know you have a borderline obsession with outfield defense, but the 2004 Red Sox won the World Series with a left fielder who never took more than five steps and a center fielder who couldn't throw more than 85 feet. Both dudes could hit though.

I love Christians approach at the plate, he is going to be great for us! he uses all fields and has no problem going the other way.
