Estimate on Napoli's hr is 450 ft. Wonder if Bautista has put any in that deck?

WMB strikes swings and miss TWICE against a position player! Guy is so bad it's laughable! LOL Yet Farrell and the FO will continue to run his carcass out there for the rest of the season, thinking it will get better? Exactly what planet do they live on? There *is* no better for Middlebrooks, just the DFA list.

Craig showing he still has pop. Now can he still pull the ball?

Great win. Gonna hate it when they trade Betts in the off-season but if they want an elite hitter or a #2 starter or better any GM worth his salt will be asking for Betts, Swihart, Ranaudo, Owens etc.

These are auditions for next year's team. We should all get used to that idea. The team can't find out what it has unless it plays them, right? As for third base, last time I checked the SS was on the DL, and the other third baseman was covering for him. That doesn't leave a lot of options. So Middlebrooks gets his day in the cold sun also. And as clueless as he can look, if he were released tomorrow there would be a half dozen teams on him in an instant.

And, it's pretty ridiculous to burn WMB's last option by sending him down for a couple weeks. I imagine he'll be penciled in at AAA next year to start the season if he's not traded. I can't imagine he will be given that his value is probably quite low even though many teams would be interested.

Next year things are crowded in the outfield. But after one year a lot of contracts are expiring and there is going to be openings. I want to keep Betts I believe that the situation will sort itself out. But if he is move I hope it's for that top 10% in the league.

Early thoughts on Cespedes? Seems like a perfect fit for a team woefully lacking in run producers. Craig. And Castillo could make this look more like a Red Sox lineup. Takes some heat off of Xander, Vazquez/Swihart and Mookie as they adjust to MLB.

Cespedes has walked 3 times in 97 plate appearances so far. Not working counts and putting pressure on pitchers puts more heat on the rest of the lineup.

LOL Is it harder to hit after he gives you the lead? Can't wait to see that statistical formula:)

Funny because it's true right? Can't argue much about math. We can only come up with new statistical theories which must be argued using math. Cespedes has helped because he's barely above an average MLB hitter on a team in which we had Napoli, Ortiz, Pedroia and Holt as the only above average hitters. The last two are barely that. Cespedes has a 110 wRC+ with 97 plate appearances. Betts has a 109 wRC+ with 82 plate appearances. Of course Cespedes plays LF, which means he's a below average hitting LF. We're going to have to hope he gets his OBP up in the 320-330 range and increases his power for him to really make an impact. I'd like him to be a Napoli-level hitter, but that's probably going to require him hitting for better average along with 35+ home runs. And walk more than 3% of the time too.

You sure like to win arguments on the internet. You're wasting your time here and should be a player agent. I made the mistake of responding to you. Don't worry. I won't do that again.

I'm like the only one here who pays attention advanced stats like on base percentage.

Well I'm sincerely confused
Cespedes has done a good job hitting when people are on base. SSS though. Either way they've been about even.

JimEd is correct. However, iirc wRC+ doesn't include situations. If you just want to measure his situational contribution to Red Sox wins so far this season, I guess you could look at Runs, RBI's, and some statistic that measures moving guys along before they eventually score. If you want to measure how valuable a guy will be going forward, wRC+ is among the best possible measures.

If you want to measure how valuable a guy will be going forward, wRC+ is among the best possible measures. Right, wRC+ doesn't include situations, because with a large enough sample size, pretty much everyone evens out no matter what the situation is. For example. Mr. Clutch Derek Jeter's wRC+ for regular season vs. playoffs is 119 vs. 121. Papi's unbelievably clutch performances give him a playoff career wRC+ of a whopping 10 points higher than his career regular season mark. Or for Papi's career- wRC+ for low leverage situations - 135, medium - 156, high - 137. It's pretty much random and it winds up that good hitters are typically good clutch hitters and that bad hitters are typically bad clutch hitters with a long enough timeline. Even Arod considered non-clutch: L,M,H leverage - 149, 140, 146

Cespedes: great to have himhitting #6, OK hitting #5, but you're not a great team if he's hitting #3 or #4.
