Quick question for those who might be in the know:
When it comes to guys like Magee, Jeff Driskel or Shaq Thompson, any idea how their Red Sox contracts are structured? Are they given a flat-rate signing bonus just to protect the team's rights to the player, and nothing more? Or are clubs required to pay the player some sort of periodic wage or stipend until they're released, traded or retire? Also, do these players receive any benefits such as medical & health insurance?
Also, is the setup different for these two-sport athletes pursuing Sport X than it is for someone like J.T. Watkins, who's fulfilling a military service commitment?
Just something I've been curious about for awhile but have never asked.

I have to question the intelligence and common sense of any athlete who would choose to play football when he is not a star, and thus will be cannon fodder until he gets hurt, over baseball.

well, he had a shot to get paid this year, as opposed to maybe in the future after several years of $4 per diems. And in the event that he doesn't get paid this year, he could still go the baseball route, no?

In the NFL he's going to make 500K a year right out of college. In baseball he's making 30k a year until he maybe makes the majors in 3-4 years. Of course if he can't make an NFL 53-man roster it's not as simple, I'm not sure what practice squad players make.

Agreed JMEI.. The nothing was ridiculous, so even someone who doesn't watch football (me) went to look it up and found they get paid once per week.
This also found interesting on the page found:

Just something I've been curious about for awhile but have never asked. My understanding is they get a small signing bonus and don't get paid while on the inactive list. I don't think the contract necessarily has any provisions beyond the standard player contract. When Gator fans flipped out about Driskel signing, he explained on Twitter that he was just getting a small signing bonus in exchange for his rights to play baseball over the next 6 years. I'd assume that's the case for Magee as well. Magee probably would make more in one week on an NFL roster than he would in his entire minor league career. He's also far better at football, in which he was All-Conference I think, than baseball, which he hadn't played in years when he picked it back up as a senior after not playing in years, iirc. He's going to give the NFL every last shot before turning to baseball.

Speaking of Driskel, he's in danger of losing the Florida starting QB job at best, and at worst has already lost it. Florida's offense has been awful, and Florida's freshman QB came in Saturday off the bench and led them to a win over Tennessee.
Probably changes the chances he ever plays baseball from .001% to .01%, but hey, you never know.

Meanwhile, Brandon Magee was added to Tampa's active roster on 9/15 and has remained on it. He's had one tackle in each of the last three games.

Driskel probably is done barring an injury. One of my close friends goes to Florida and she (not a football expert granted) said he's lost support from the student body to the point where she never sees him building enough confidence to succeed at QB there. I'd still take him at UConn any day though

Gator fans finally thought they had seen the last of the Driskel experience, and then the new QB seemingly gets himself into trouble

I guess Austin Davis made the right choice staying with the Rams. He is looking good .

I'd still take him at UConn any day though One of my nephews goes to UF and is a big FB fan. He says Driskel is looked at as the reason for the team's failure on campus among many of his class mates. Would be interesting if the kid turned down FB after the year and played baseball along side Denney, should Denney ever play with the team again.

Driskel and Denney have the exact same shot of ever playing for the Red Sox.

Old friend Shaq Thompson is carving out a solid career in football. ESPN Insider ranks him among the top 25 college football prospects (23rd to be exact). He is a Junior outside-linebacker for Washington and he appears to be a late first/early second round pick.
It seems he has turned the corner from his 37 strike out in 39 AB performance in the GCL.
