I place as much credence in Castillo's underwhelming offensive performance to start his career, as I do his performance last night. Ask me again next April. Well, I agree except that I might say June. There is no question that he looks the part. His ease in tracking and catching balls is noteworthy.

True that, that's what I like about this community: the sky is falling mentality is fun to mock but mostly it isn't serious and most posters are really level minded. You might however be forgetting when someone said Iglesias swing looked like A-Rod's. There was no breaks on that train.Don't see what's wrong with that; he hit as many HRs as A-Rod this year. And Will Middlebrooks!

“@jmastrodonato: Rusney Castillo has two HRs at his home park and still no souvenirs. Guy who caught first one was offered Ortiz autog. for it, but declined.”
What an a$$

The FO is going to have to make a number of tough decisions this off season based on far less than 300 at bat sample sizes.
I'm encouraged so far.

Only a lousy autograph? You'd think they'd give him a bat or maybe a couple of tickets to a future game. There are thousands of Ortiz autographs out there, but only one Castillo first home run ball. I don't blame the guy. Sox were getting way too cheap.

Ortiz autographed, game-worn jerseys are worth at least a grand or so based on eBay sales.

I'd ask for my Ortiz autograph on the side of a free beer. Sam Adams or better though.

And after all, it IS the adult-size children with their irrational attachment to people and teams who play a game for a living who pay the freight that keeps the entire money-soaked culture of pro sports going. At this moment, NO ONE realizes it more than Rusney Castillo, baseball's newest mega-millionaire. Not getting a particular souvenir is one of the miniscule prices to pay for the boatloads of money he is getting.

I have a friend who caught Cal Ripken JR's 300th home run ball and got a signed bat and two signed jerseys. He got to meet him and a few players to. I thought it was a fair trade, because of the memories.
Castillo's bat speed is a little bit slower than I thought it would be, but his bat stays in the zone longer than I expected.

I'm not saying the guy has no right to keep the ball. What I'm saying is that he's a terrible person based on this incident alone, knowing absolutely nothing else about him. Moving on.
As far as Castillo the player goes, I'm starting to like the signing. We still don't know what kind of hitter he's going to be, but the speed/defense/raw power combination is pretty obvious. He'd have to be pretty awful hitter to be a complete bust, and he doesn't have to be a great one to be a very good player. The range of outcomes is still wide, but the floor looks fairly high right now.

I used to think that its great for the fans just to give up the ball for a fair trade. I remember jeter had a famous homer (3,000 hit?) that he got for a couple of trinkets. Then I saw Jeter monetize every last souvenier this season, despite already having earned more than $200 million in his career.
Castillo just earned $72 million. If its important to him, let him pay what he thinks its worth to him. If he doesn't care, then let the guy keep it. If he does care, let him pay. No need for the team to get him a freebe by offering up an Ortiz signature.

No doubt the guy gave the ball to a little girl sitting near him.

the Red Sox internal organizational comp on Rusney Castillo is Shane Victorino in his prime

I think he comp is betts.
Both are gods hitters. Both project as plus defenders. Both have speed. And both have pop gun arms.
Not sure we have room for both on the roster next season.
I prefer to keep betts.
Ps: if victorino blows up next season, I would still prefer Brentz to Castillo.

Anyway, I think the Sox need to make room for both these guys next season, but also have a backup plan or two (Vic and Bradley would serve nicely as that plan). You can't count on both, but you're going to have to give them some rope before you know. That's what I hope they do. Dunno what you do with our three left fielders. I agree that a Papi sig doesn't sound like enough for that ball.

Too early to judge Castillo, but I highly doubt Brentz is capable of starting in any other role than a platoon OF. Castillo's defense in RF would be plus, and obviously he's a better baserunner too. Brentz probably will strike out 25% of the time, and won't hit RHP at all next year, maybe even throughout his entire career. Very slim chance Brentz ends up better than Castillo.

Betts and Castillo are not really that comparable. Castillo has more power, Betts has more patience, contact, and usable baserunning speed. Betts is almost certainly the better player, even as an outfielder.

The Disney World money flowing through MLB and a 50 dollar autograph for a Ball that will someday be in Cooperstown after they build the Cuban wing with all the promising talent from that country.. I'd keep it too and make sure every top executive including Castillo's agent knows who i am, and I got it! Good for him, hold out for every last penny

Today's broadcasters gave Castillo a comp to Ron Gant and I believe attributed it to the Sox themselves. That would be very fine with me.
