Sox claim Francisco off waivers.
Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats Follow Juan Francisco was 24% better than league average when facing RHP last year, 90% worse than league average when facing LHP.

Left handed bat for the bench? Nava to AAA to preserve depth? If the Sox plan on sticking with Francisco on the 25 man, makes it even more likely an OF gets moved, probably soon

Before anyone goes too far with that, the Nava comment was total snark. I bitched about it for the entire time he was wasting his time in AAA while Carp was doing nothing in the majors... Just to preserve depth.

I would think if he is sticking then Napoli might be moving, with Craig and Francisco platooning 1B. Could be probably an insignificant move still.

I can't really see this team putting themselves in a position where they are counting on Craig at this point.

Pete Abe just suggested it's possible they claimed him to have a chat about his contract desires should they (when they?) non-tender him. I think they did that with Pokey Reese, right?

Was just a creative thought, only reason Napoli would move is if there was great value coming back. Napoli should bring back a good return if traded. Without any other moves we have 5 players with big platoon splits, Nava, Craig, Victorino, WMB, Francisco. Can't really keep them all without being creative.

Listening to the Blue Jays radio station and they are elated that Francisco has been claimed and is off the roster.

Nava to AAA to preserve depth? Nava doesn't have options, does Francisco? No, he's been out of them for a while apparently.

I think that makes a lot of sense. The non-tender deadline is 12/2, and I think the consensus is that Sandoval will be signed by then, so he's sort of a Plan C or D in place, although frankly it's hard to see how he's be better than Holt. It seems unlikely that he'll survive on the 40-man, let alone the 25. He provides organizational depth, and could end up DH'ing at Pawtucket should Lavarnway not pass through waivers.

Seems like a reasonable bench bat for a righty-heavy roster as long as they're comfortable with Holt as the backup shortstop.

Regardless of what happens with 3B, I still like having Francisco as depth in case Napoli or Ortiz get hurt. He's basically Pedro Alvarez lite, except he can throw a baseball.

I appear to be the only one that genuinely likes this pickup. Why?
1) Sandoval's bat doesn't merit the long term/big dollar contract, regardless of weight concerns.
2) Francisco is a more than serviceable hitter against righties (yes, I agree he swings at too much garbage). Against lefties, Holt starts at 3rd. Strict platoon.
3) Reasonable cost, and if all of a sudden Middlebrooks or Cecchini completely annihilates AAA, you deal him or cut him loose to bring them up.

And if we got panda and needed dough for starter two, could move Napoli and Frisco platoons at first...
Lester + Panda - Napoli + (Shields. | Hamels | Santana)
40m - 13m + 20m < cap.

I really don't see a scenario where he sticks on the roster, but if so, he would probably replace Craig in the Mike Carp role, where he rarely plays.

I think it appears that way because few of us think this transaction is in lieu of signing Sandoval. If Boston was truly "all in" on the FA, this doesn't change that. Granted, if they miss out on Pablo, that might make this more significant but . . .

The way I see Francisco being picked up is that he could actually be placed in a platoon at 3rd with Middlebrooks, if somehow we strike out with the Panda. I will be surprised if he ever makes Fort Myers this spring. Ben is just protecting himself in case things go wrong this winter. He is an "insurance" policy.
