Ken Rosenthal @ken_Rosenthal Source: Hanley Ramirez headed to Boston tomorrow to finalize deal with #RedSox.
Ken Rosenthal @ken_Rosenthal Sources say Hanley’s deal with #RedSox will be in range of five years, $90M.

I like it. His bat plays better than Sandoval's with the eventual move to 1B, which was assumed for at least the last 2 years of the potential Sandoval signing.
No clue where he plays yet, but assume 3B and Sandoval is back in SF

Love it.
Put him in left and move Cespedes for a quality arm.

So we'll get to witness Han-Ram after all. I can't hate on Hanley, he is a huge Licey fan and came through the Sox academy. Literally the perfect match for me.
Also that dude I said was a troll just got more credible,

Welcome back Hanley! Keep Betts and Bogaerts and bring back Lester and I'm thrilled with the Sox offseason.
Great start to the offseason

Spectacular deal at the onset. Likely plays 3B, then an eventual move to 1B/DH, where his bat is good enough to actually fill that spot.
Health is obviously a concern, but he never missed much time with MIA, and still hit at an elite level. Also, he's not playing SS

Wow, amazing. Not often you get superstar upside for 5/$90 these days.

It does not sound like this signing would be mutually exclusive with a Panda signing. The wording in on a few stories is vague, but the word is that the Sox are going after BOTH Hanley and Sandoval.

And now the rumbling are that Sandoval will join him. That would just be crazy

This is an excellent signing. Not only does he offer the highest offensive upside on the market but he provides roster construction flexibility as a 3B, LF or fill in SS. It doesn't force a trade of Cespedes if he's the 3B nor does it preclude a signing of Sandoval or Headley if he's the LF.
Add Lester, Miller, Ross and a trade for an Iwakuma added to another year experience for Bogaerts, Betts, Castillo and Vazquez and you have to like the opening day roster. For a bonus go big for Moncada to add a top prospect to the system and Ben will have done his job.

“@mikeberardino: Also on Hanley, throughout #Marlins tenure, was common for him to ask clubbies to put #RedSox game on TV closest to his locker. #exile” Hanley Ramirez on David Ortiz in 2011: "He's still teaching me how to play the game. That's why I love him." #RedSox t.co/rOCpdRqyka

Yeah if those contract numbers are correct, this is a great deal.
And maybe get Panda too?

Great stuff.
Hanley may hit right handed, but he hits both Lefty's and Right's just as well. He also has the bat to play 1st base (even though he would be an expensive 1Bmen) and even take over the DH spot once Ortiz hangs it up.
Really good signing, especially for under $100 million and 6+ years. Good work Sox and Ben C.

For the money they were talking about for the Panda, with his body type and likelihood of pulling a mini Prince Fielder on us, this makes way more sense. I especially like the roster flexibility factor. And we are a team which can handle injury situations more than most. Edit: I really think this means no Panda. I didn't even want them to go $90 mil at 3rd base. No way they sign Panda also and plug the holes in the rotation unless they trade a boatload of prospects. Ramirez must have been the fall back. As it is already, they may be looking to trade some guys. The only thing going for the Panda is the fact that we are so right handed. They would definitely be trading people to insert Panda in the lineup now. www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/red-sox-on-verge-of-signing-hanley-ramirez/

Love it. More upside than any other available hitter and probably a relative bargain in this market.

I especially like the roster flexibility factor. And we are a team which can handle injury situations more than most. Nowhere does it say that the Sox are withdrawing their offer to Sandoval. He might wind up going back to SF or even try out SD or he could be back on a plane to Boston (as a guy on twitter is saying Panda is on his flight from Miami to Boston). It's possible in Ben's mind that worst case scenario Hanley is at 3b and the Sox get a middle of the order hitter or best case scenario the Sox get Sandoval, a better defensive 3b and and switchhitter to play 3b, and they move Hanley to LF, which to them might be a better option than having Nava platoon with Craig or hope Victorino is healthy enough for the 3rd OF spot, which makes it all the more easier to part with Cespedes in a deal for a needed pitcher. So it is quite possible the Sox are going to spend the dough on both Ramirez and Sandoval.
