I think Hamels got a lot of value. Seems like most of this board doesn't think he's an ACE and elite pitcher. I disagree, I think he is an ACE. I think he's better then Lester. I would rather sign Lester and trade for a good number 2 that won't cost us our top prospects. If that can't happen do we trade for players like Cueto or Zimmerman that will be a free agent in one year? That's where Hamels contract is a plus. I think he has been an elite pitcher. I think he will not be an elite pitcher 5 years from now. You keep talking about how great he's been in the past but that just doesn't matter. Until you demonstrate a basic understanding of the fact that players get worse as they get older (and then perhaps try to explain why you don't think Hamels will get bad as quickly as other players), it will be hard to take you seriously.

I've never said he'll be elite in 5 years, no one knows. I'm not going to try and explain why I think Hamels won't get bad as quickly as other players, that is worthless. There is no formula to tell how a player will age, its a crapshoot. I do know Hamles has been elite for a long time and doesn't have injury concerns, that's all you can ask for. I'll say this, there is a better chance that Hamels is elite 5 years from now, then Lester. It's hard to take you seriously, you just assume due to age that he won't be elite, that's just not true. He could be a Roy Holliday, Pedro Martinez, Josh Beckett that flame out early or he could be Curt Schilling, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux or Mike Mussina that pitch very well into their late 30's.

It was fine when we traded Hanley Ramirez for Beckett because Beckett was 25. But I'm not trading Xander or Betts for ANY 30 year old pitcher no matter how good they are.
