Albert Pujols now has a .917 OPS and is leading the AL with 23 HR. While the .275 average and .336 OBP aren't characteristic of what he used to be, I'm pretty pumped to see him having a major resurgence. Always been a fan of the guy, and it's not his fault the Angels gave him that ridiculous contract. He has always been one that I secretly wanted to trade for with a little subsidy. But then I look at the contract again.

So under the file of people I'd sorta forgotten about, Mike Montgomery threw a four-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts for the Mariners yesterday. He is also somehow still only 25.

That's a testament to how scary good he previously played.

Lester having a crappy year I have to wonder if a Cubs prospects forum have long discussions on whether he's an ace.

Scherzer perfect through 5 (knock on wood)
This 3 game stretch is insane. Mad Max.

I'm just trying to think about the numbers that Prime Pedro could put with this expanded strike zone: a negative season FIP?

Ben Badler @benbadler 6m6 minutes ago Congrats to Miguel Sano getting called up to Minnesota. In the eight years I've covered July 2, the best position prospect I've written up.

Lester having a crappy year Too bad the majority of the Red Sox rotation isn't having as "crappy" a year as Lester is. Don't be too much of a homer. Lester might not be worth $26 million, but I would have preferred to give him that money than Porcello and Masterson (and Miley).

To a lesser extent Masterson is only signed this year, and Porcello is only going to be 30 for one year of his deal.

You left out the part where Lester would be getting $26 million when he's 36/37, where none of Porcello, Masterson or Miley would. The thing with Lester is that he needs to show excess value at the front of his deal and he's not worth even close to $26 million in year one.

Lester has a 3.44 SIERA, a 3.28 xFIP, and a 3.44 FIP. He's not having a great season and is slightly underperforming his contract, but I think it's a stretch to say he's been "crappy". As mentioned, you'd prefer he was better, since he's only likely to get worse from here and he needs to bank some surplus value up front, but it could be a lot worse.

David Ross once again hits the 7-day concussion DL. :-( I feel bad for the guy, he's gonna have to seriously consider retirement at this rate.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that the Cubs get good years out of Lester up thru his age 35/36 season while Porcello is a bust over 4 years. Lester won't be "worth" $26 million/year but the Cubs should get a strong performance over the length of his contract. Lester reminds me Andy Pettitte. Not saying he'll have his career, but guys like that don't all fall off a cliff come age 35 or 36, and by the time Lester is 35 or 36, $26 million/year might be a free agent 3rd starter given the way free agent inflation goes. I understand (and like) the Red Sox philosophy regarding capturing what they consider the prime age. It's debatable whether they got the right talent for it, though. I'm not convinced at this point that Porcello is ever more than a back end starter, a #4 type on a good team. Maybe next year he'll convince me. He sure hasn't thus far. And given how the money was proportioned this year, I'll take Lester in 2015. I have a feeling I'll be saying that for the majority of the next five years as the Sox do have to spend that "saved" money wisely, and that didn't necessarily happen this year.
