That was clutch, but not RISP clutch. edit - funny that he hit it off #97. Can't get much worse than that.

Still no Vazquez catching, which is a little worrisome. Brian MacPherson ?@brianmacp 51s51 seconds ago Farrell said Vazquez (elbow) will catch in a minor-league game Friday, expects "more clear read" on Opening Day chances by the weekend. Note that a few days ago Vazquez said it wasn't the elbow, it was his triceps I believe. ADD: Maybe not: Alex Speier ?@alexspeier 39s39 seconds ago Sox expect to know by weekend if Vazquez, Uehara will be ready for Opening Day. Vazquez' elbow 'improving,' but MRI hasn't been ruled out. Ahhh the clarification: Alex Speier ?@alexspeier 22s22 seconds ago Vazquez initially had elbow soreness, tried to compensate with mechanics, then felt triceps soreness. Will catch minor lg game tomorrow. MRI today. espn.go.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/42460/vazquez-scheduled-for-mri

I do not miss AJP one bit. He probably cost Teheran 3-4 strikes already.

One consideration if Vazquez has to go on a brief DL stint, Swihart is the only minor league catcher on the 40-man so I imagine he'd be called up first so they don't have to DFA/waive anyone.

I've been pretty vocal about saying that Swhart needs the development time in Triple-A - probably the full season, certainly four months or so. But if they need a catcher for the first 7-10 days, I do think makes the most sense to keep him. He's on the 40-man, he'll probably start twice at most, and the PawSox season starts four days after the big league club does.

A few observations -
Buchholz' stuff looks better than it did all season last year. Horrible BABIP luck today.
In a very SSS, using the eye test, Swihart doesn't look nearly as good as Vazquez at framing yet.

Mookie is not human. My goodness, that man is amazing at baseball. I think if he stays healthy, he will be top 3 in MVP this year.

It's pretty remarkable how Mookie has done absolutely nothing to dispel the unrealistically high expectations of him say a year ago, and if anything, his stock is somehow going up and his ceiling, especially compared to his contract, is very likely one of the best in all of baseball.
One of the craziest parts is that it wasn't all that long ago when we were so high on X as a potential "generational" prospect/hitter, and Mookie has potentially passed that point such a short time after

Imagine if someone came into this board 22 months ago and said. 2 years from Now Mookie Betts is going to be a better player than Xander Bogaerts!?! I would have laughed at them.
FWIW, I still think Xander is going to develop into a star and could be just as valuable a player as Mookie is.

I'm still pretty high on Bogaerts. He was the best hitter on the team through May before he fell off. He also destroyed the minor leagues with a great plate approach. But I guess now that he is 22 his prime years are probably behind him.

Of course, don't get me wrong. But he's pretty much done everything humanly possible outside of full time long term MLB action. The offense certainly has some ?'s in it, but my god, the upside is absurd

Wasn't it nice to see Gomes, Ciriaco and AJP again? Tim K said it on the ESPN broadcast of the game. Best thing Tim K said: the only kind of fantasy baseball he plays is fantasy umpire baseball. You draft umpires and whoever has the most ejections at the end of the season wins.

I was predicting that Xander would lead the team in WAR this year, right up until the start of ST. I'm now predicting he'll be second. Mookie, BTW, besides looking insanely good, is now hitting .487 / .512 / .923 on the spring. High SA is the one number that has shown to be predictive for the regular season.

Holy crap. Some scout said that Mookie looked like the best baseball player in all of Florida. Is Andrew McCutchen out of state for some reason? Or is that scout just exaggerating and/or a moron? I love Mookie too but let's chill the expectations. If he plays 140 games and hits like .290/.350/.420 I'll be thrilled. That probably won't get him MVP votes but it will make him one of the best players on what is possibly a playoff team.

Short memories... It is spring training, and great performances come and go - quickly - all the time. Betts looks like the real deal, and I love the way he can work over even very good pitchers. But it's still.. just... spring training.

I'll take the under on a .923 slugging average. But I'll take the over vs. either of McCutchen's first 2 years' (age 22 & 23) hitting stats.
