I started this thread in the trade proposal subforum 6 days ago; The Pirates are reportedly looking for a Catcher & Starting Pitcher and could be willing to trade Joel Hanrahan. triblive.com/sports/pirates/28893....9#axzz2BGigXNJhI think this is where the Red Sox are headed

Yes it was a move I had hoped they would make and he might not be able to catch 100 games. But I want a catch and throw guy behind the plate. I would rather have that than a mediocre hitter and catcher behind the plate. Pitching gets a hell of a lot better with a good defensive catcher.

OTOH if the Bucs would let Starling fly.........

... I'll echo what some on Twitter have said: I'm not sure a Lavarnway/Ross catching combo makes a lot of sense, or at least as much sense as a Salty/Ross platoon does. I don't know how that means things will shake down, but that appears to be the situation at present. Given Ross' reverse splits, the team can simply ignore the platoon, I believe. I know one thing from that pitching chart: any righthander foolish enough to go low and inside is going to regret it. Let the playing time work itself out over the early part of the season without regard to the opposition pitching hand.. That just doesn't seem necessary here. Also, two years for Ross is just about perfect if they want either of the current catchers to bone up on some serious catching chops. Finally, buy low, sell high if you're going to trade.. Lavarnaway's through with AAA, but he didn't established a comfort level in the short stint at the end of the season, just as you point out. He could easily regain that in spring training. It would bring a low-value return to move him now. Saltalamacchia's, on the other hand, has probably reached his ceiling. What you see is what you get: tremendous power but an otherwise mundane hitting approach.

I agree with Chris' comment on twitter that this gives the Red Sox flexibility to trade either Saltalamacchia or Lavarnway depending on what other teams want to offer. They'll be receiving offers on both and with Ross' minimal splits, they can go in either direction.

Really enjoy reading Speier's stuff. It's thorough, well-reasoned, and always thoughtful. There are a lot of possibilities here, and even more if Napoli wants to be part of the team.

I like this signing as well, but am wondering why the Braves weren't interested at that price. A cursory search shows that McCann is the only catcher on their 40 man and the next nearest decent catching prospect is in AA. I'm in their region and can tell you they are watching payroll. Chippers money (and Bournes) are going to arbitration raises. Also they are pretty high on Betencourt in the minors.

I think its very possible that the Red Sox go into spring training with Salty, Lavarneay & Ross if they don't find a trade they like and then end up with Salty & Ross on the 25 man roster with Larvarnway going to AAA while they wait for the best deal to come their way depending on the teams needs coming out of spring training & into July.

I like this move, makes us better without hurting the future. Hope Ross and Larv split the games.
