MUJICA DFA'd! Woohoo! Best thing he's ever done in a Red Sox uni.

By the way, I assume DFAing someone doesn't get around the 10-day option restriction, has anyone been keeping track of which pitchers we can actually call up at this point?

File under teaching a man to fish: www.soxprospects.com/transactions.htmNow, I'll also give you the fish: It'd be anyone who was optioned on or before April 26. And Matt Barnes was optioned on April 26. Hembree, Wright, JBJ, Hinojosa are within the 10 days.

Maybe the front office is as fed up with this team's performance as we all are. Would it be too much to ask to have Mujica take a few others with him? Maybe him and Craig can share a flight out of town?

So assuming they want a RHP, the options would be Barnes, Spruill, Noe Ramirez and Celestino. I'm going to guess Matt Barnes wins a free trip to Canada.

I assume the minor league guys all have their passports in order just in case.

Clearly Barnes, imo ... scratched him from his start and put him in the bullpen, then DFA'd Mujica right after. Not sure I love the idea long-term to convert Barnes, but this doesn't necessarily end his future in the rotation, and it's sorely needed now.
But, maybe I'm wrong, and it'll be ... nah, it's Barnes.
Now if Pat Light can just blow through the upper two levels of the minors before July 15, we'll maybe be talking ...

Let the Matt Barnes era of the 2015 bullpen begin. I hope he can consistently hit 96 out of the pen come July, once he's adjusted to pitching in 1-2 inning stints.
In the short term, he'd be a great long man to have ready for Masterson's starts. I'm not sure if they will want him pitching more than a couple of innings in an outing though.

Or...... Masterson to the bullpen and ERod to the rotation?
Probably too soon, I know.

Oh what a travesty! Lol. He really never panned out. Time to integrate some of these kids we spent years building.
By the way Gunkel starting is a terrible idea. I mean statistics wise to make the starting rotation is so low. I can not believe with all these high end arms we can't form a devastating bullpen . Maybe not right now but piece by piece.

Concur. Dark horse... Varvaro? I mean, the Brewers are probably on the phone with Ben right now trying to sell K-Rod. (Who doesn't have any trade value since he's being paid a lot - they'd have to take Mujica's contract in return I think.)

There might be several scenarios that they're planning, but the move of Barnes to the pen yesterday probably pushes the probability towards him being Mujica's replacement.
Or they might just call him up for 3-4 games and then put Wright in as the long man. Which on this team, having a long man seems like a necessity.
I don't want Barnes to get yo-yo'ed from the rotation to the pen and back or from AAA to the majors. I think that has a bigger effect than they might realize. I didn't like it when they were doing it to Webster and RDLR and Ranaudo. (not that the outcomes would have necessarily been different) I'd think stability and comfort could help calm and stop them from being afraid of making a bad pitch because they didn't want to go back to the minors. And the work with the major league group of coaches and players is probably a lot more helpful for them.

I think June 1 is when they start looking to make changes to the rotation - and I definitely could see Masterson moving to the bullpen if he keeps pitching like this. I've been crowing that he's best used as a bullpen arm for years and would be happy to see that.

If Buchholz remains healthy, I think they'll have to start auditioning the kids in June to see if they have to make a big move at the deadline. And, of the "kids," Owens clearly isn't ready, and Barnes is now part of the bullpen, so ... you're talking Rodriguez, primarily, and secondarily Johnson and Wright. And, victory lap noted ... I have agreed with you all along, which is why I was never enthused by the signing.

And another of Ben's bullpen ruminations bites the dust. And he's still owed 3.5 - 4 million. Sox prospect members get their pound of flesh....but improvement is also needed at the top of the organizational structure. I hope he can replace this dead weight with an above average piece. He needs an easy A....as much as the players/managers do.

If we look at the picture this team is still in transition , I mean we have over 75 million coming off the books between not picking up options and free agents. So this is critical to get a plan and move forward. It's early this can be corrected but right now we need some good fortune.
