The Indians would be an ideal trade partner. Maybe we can flip them Hanley + prospects for Santana (1B) and one of their SP's. With Brantley out, I'm not sure they can trade Santana. I do think they should add a subsidized Hanley. three years of Hanley @11 mil per year + prospects may land a Salazar. Would take Hanley, Owens, +....Santana is signed thru 2016 year @ 8 mil....Has a team option for 12 mil in 2017. Did not have a great year this year.

Where is the play GM thread? Does it not exist his year? That was always a fun one. For the record, my apologies if I put this in the wrong thread. This seemed as good as any, I wasn't really sure where to put it! Thanks to everyone for the responses. I'm certainly not opposed to the idea of trading away prospects this year, I'm just thinking I won't be upset at all if by the end of this offseason our potential trades end up being more rumours than actual deals coming to fruition

Pete Abraham @peteabe 2m2 minutes ago Dave Dombrowski just left the GM Meetings. Nothing imminent for #RedSox but he’s quite optimistic. Said a lot was accomplished here.

I know it only takes one team. Just seems these days most teams have real quality center fielders. I don't think we'd be able to "sell" another team on Castillo as their CF unless the salary is heavily subsidized. I think we value him more as a good LF with the capability to be better, especially with a full season under his belt. He has the tools, just needs polishing. I could see the Giants being interested in Castillo - But, there would have to be money changing hands. The Red Sox outfield acquisitions of 2014 have to be one of the most poorly thought out series of events in recent general managerial history. Hanley, Castillo and Craig collectively piled $188 million into the liability column, with very little to show for that investment. Is it fair to lump Craig in with the OF group?

I hope painful is not in reference to dealing someone like Mookie/Xander/Swihart.

Does it seem to anyone like we may be better waiting a year before trading our prospects? My thoughts are that Toronto probably has one really strong year left in them, and then should be in trouble because of aging/lack of prospects. As well, our pitchers still have question marks (with Porcello and Kelly showing signs late in the season and Owens being very hit-or-miss) about how productive they can be and you never know, we may be surprised. As well, in a year we will know a lot more about Castillo, JBJ, and whether or not Hanley can play first base. Finally, our prospects are basically all in low-A and I'm worried that if we trade half of the top group (Devers, Moncada, Benintendi, Espinoza, Margot who is admittedly in AA) and then half of the rest don't pan out (which is probably a fair assessment considering the number of prospects who struggle as they move up the ladder) we're suddenly staring at one top prospect rather than the plethora we have now. I just get the feeling like in one year we will have a lot more information about our franchise as a whole. That is not to say I'm against going out and getting a David Price-type starter (or David Price himself!), just that I'm hesitant to trade the farm this offseason and think if we can endure one more season of mediocrity (with what I believe to be underrated upside) then we will be in a better position to deal. Thoughts? I already stated that we'd likely be better off if we waited until at least a third of the season before trading any of our main/core prospects/younger players. The team would have a lot better understanding of where it actually stood as we have several players that are really hard to project right now for various reasons. Sign a TORP and 2 set-up/closer types, and roll the dice for a third of the season. With so much young talent chances are overall their value will only increase. What do you have to lose?

Not out of the question, but, just about all our prospects are moving up (Ball & Chavis may repeat) at least one level this spring, & some of them may be overwhelmed out of the gate or beyond, thus killing their value. Some guys just run into a wall when they reach a certain level, most of the time it's from High A to AA. With that being said, I think your right to just sit on them & see how they develop, if a few hit a wall, so be it. Ride out the ones who succeed & go from there....

Thoughts? With prospects you always face the same problem hold on to them longer and hope their value increases or trade them now before their value might decrease. I really think this needs to be done case by case and not just the whole system lumped together. For example I have a feeling that Margots value may never be higher then right now, so I would trade him if another team wanted him. But players like Moncada, Devers, and Espinoza I would not trade as I think their value could still increase in a big way.
I would never wait on trading prospects because of another team in my division, never. Also I don't think Toronto is even that good. I mean come on that's not a glory years Yankees squad with all time talent. Its a good hitting team that lacks pitching at the moment.
I wouldn't be worried about prospect depth at all. Where are you going to play them all? Look at all the young players currently in majors, now look at our minor leagues. There is not room for them all, a bunch need to be traded or they will just be a waste sitting in the minors for years.
I just don't get waiting a year and how it would help us. How many years can Ortiz turn back the clocks? For all we know we might just have wasted his last good year. So if he has another great year next year, I don't want to waste it hoping that some prospects might increase their value. Those prospects already have a fairly high value. This is Boston we should be a contender almost every year!!! The thing I think your missing too is that we can always just sign an ace and not have to give up our prospects. I'm looking at Cueto and Zimmerman, two guys that have seen their value decrease and could be good values as free agents.

Jon Morosi @jonmorosi 31s31 seconds ago #Mariners looking at a number of CF options and have interest in trading for Jackie Bradley Jr. @foxsports Well only two players come to mind that I would trade Bradley for and that's Walker and Paxton but I don't see Mariners doing that. Unless our GM is looking for prospects to flip for another player.

The quote gets me nervous but could be construed in so many ways. It could be painful the amount of money the Sox have to shell out for David Price or a lesser free agent such as Cueto. It could be painful that the Sox part ways with JBJ and Kelly or Buchholz to get what they're looking for. It could be painful that the Sox have to dip into their stash of "surplus" prospects and deal Margot (if the Sox can replace JBJ adequately I'd just as soon keep Margot for the future) and Guerra. It could be painful that the Sox feel compelled to deal Moncada or Swihart or Devers or even Espinoza. I hope the pain is only financial. I love the young kids the Sox have coming up thru the system. I really had hoped to see Swihart behind the plate with Sam Travis, Pedroia, Bogaerts, and Moncada forming the infield, Betts, Margot, and Benintendi manning the outfield and Devers coming up to DH once Ortiz has retired, along with eventually Espinoza and Kopech joining Rodriguez, Owens, and whoever else the Sox sign as a free agent pitcher. But if they were really going to do that, Ben Cherington wouldn't have been replaced by Dombrowski.

Ken Rosenthal @ken_Rosenthal 2 min. Sources: #RedSox doing background work on #Reds’ Chapman. Indicates sincerity of interest, not that a deal is close.

Can people please stop using Sonny Gray's name in the same sentence with real aces like Sale and Fernandez? Gray has never had a 4 win season. Someone else mentioned Betts in a Gray deal earlier.

I was so relieved to open Twitter and see that nearly everyone seems to be in agreement that the Mookie-for-Harvey idea is dumb, and then I read this. I hope this is just Lauber talking and not an indication that anyone actually thinks Mookie (or Xander) for Gray is something that should happen.
