PS Shades of Frankie Rodriguez. Whom I blame for my addiction to minor league baseball. Wasn't Williams Jerez also from there? As to Frankie, I remember the draft-and-follow going all the way to the day of the draft before they signed him. The Globe (the only source of info) claimed he would have been a high first rounder had he not signed.

So Aiken is off the board at 17 and Matuella is still there? Matuella considered 1-1 talent before his injury as well. Are his injuries more concerning or could just be that Aiken was considered a better talent with the pedigree of already going 1-1.
I know one possibility could be the money he's asking for BUT how much leverage can you really have? You'd think a college junior that is hurt doesn't have any more leverage than a college senior would have because it's not as if he can go back and pitch next year.
I would think it's a safe bet he doesn't slip too much further, but then again I've never been a very good betting man.

Greg that the Lou Gorman years. I remember bites and pieces of the prospects from those years. My big one was the Pedro sweepstakes Rose and Pavano. At least the Expos knew who to pick. It wasn't even close. Lol. The Duke wasn't so bad because when he needed to make a deal he always had a prospect.

Matuella doesn't have a lot of choices, right? Weird that he has fallen this far.

Reactions on facebook and twitter on the Benintendi pick are hilarious and horrifying at the same time. A selection: stupid stupid stupid we done need anymore outfielders we need pitching Pathetic!!! Pitching dumbasses!!!! Should have drafted a pitcher or an infielder. DID WE REALLY NEED ANOTHER OUTFIELD PROSPECT? ? Why do we always draft these little guys? That's all ya got? ....

Matuella doesn't have a lot of choices, right? Weird that he has fallen this far. He's a junior and can build back some value next year at Duke if he can come back healthy (not sure he will be ready to pitch before next April).

Pretty unlikely that he's going to pitch much and it probably won't be too impressive to start with. Depending on what he's asking for will probably determine a lot of how interested the Sox are in him. They cannot risk not signing him.

How long after TJ until you are pitching in games again? would Matuella even be able to take the hill?

I think he gets popped before he gets to the Sox. Perhaps by the D-Backs. I think Swanson goes underslot.

David Hill sounds like Brian Johnson's RH twin.
. David Hill, rhp, San Diego (No. 44)
Hill asserted himself as one of the most polished pitchers in the college class this spring. His stuff isn’t explosive, but he can pitch in the low 90s and has feel for three average pitches.

Hard to imagine a guy going high throwing just a few bullpen sessions. Plus there is also the risk that his stuff doesn't come back. At the very least one would have to think that his negotiating powers are much less than if he was healthy. I'm sure in the third round he's going to get overslot money to some extent....I just ponder if it would be low enough where we could afford him.

Matuella has two years of eligibility left. Obviously there's a lot of risk for him there but he's not quite in the same situation as a normal college junior. He has some leverage, at least. David Hill sounds like Brian Johnson's RH twin. . David Hill, rhp, San Diego (No. 44) Hill asserted himself as one of the most polished pitchers in the college class this spring. His stuff isn’t explosive, but he can pitch in the low 90s and has feel for three average pitches. Johnson wasn't very polished, beyond having a pretty clean delivery. Part of Johnson's appeal was that he was a two-way player at UF. The Red Sox loved his athleticism and thought his stuff would take a significant step forward when he focused on pitching. I think the myth of Johnson being the polished, safe pick comes from the fact that, at 21, he looked like he was about 35.

ehh I'm probably just dreaming. Maybe Benintendi is underslot by 200K they can go up another 300K with the 5% overage. If money is saved elsewhere they could probably easily offer Matuella around 1.5-1.8 million but....if that's all it would take I wonder if someone else would have signed him by now.
I also didn't realize he has 2 years of eligibility left.
