We've only taken one HS pitcher through 30 rounds This was thought to be a very down year in that constituency, iirc, so that would make sense. --- Mangrum went to school about 20 minutes from UVA. Go fig.

Will Henderson Jr @w_HendersonJr 1 u @ryantice do you remember recruits name? Heard Jack Conley turned down Red Sox in the 5th.
FWIW, looks like the Red Sox couldn't strike a deal with him earlier

There are still 50 college players on BA's top 500. Some of them are probably sophomores or injured players who'll return to college, but there's still some talent to be had.

Imagine we drafted in 2012 Bregman and Fulmer, what if we signed them went over the money it might of been worth it? To take the penalty. I mean, maybe if we're being purely results based three years out, then yes, I would certainly rather have Bregman and Fulmer than Ball and Stankiewicz or Ball and Chavis. That said, you can't be certain at the time that Bregman and Fulmer are going to pan out like they have (for context: Austin Maddox was ranked higher by both BA and PG and Jamie Callahan was ranked comparably), nor can you be certain about what players you're giving up in the future - say the Sox wind up with the number 2 pick that year and get Bryant, or if they'd been particularly high on J.P. Crawford and picked him at 7 instead, that would certainly change things. You would also be assuming that there was, in fact, a dollar figure that would have gotten them to sign. There just may not have been one. Sometimes guys want to go to school because it's important to the family or something like that.. I know Chris it is too hard to tell now. I was kinda playing Monday morning quarterback. You know we talk about the limit to spending and the penalty involved.

Braves took DJ Neal, who was linked to the Sox. If he lasted 30 rounds I'd have to imagine there wasn't that clear of a link.

Just noticed that too. I don't really see any obvious underslot guys in their early picks (Rounds 1-4) so I kind of doubt they would be able to sign even one of these guys. They are probably trying for one of them, but thinking abstractly I wonder if it would ever be feasible to blow past your cap and it be worth losing your next 2 first round picks. Of Kiley's top 200, about 50 of them were available on day 3. If you were to try this, it'd probably be a better strategy to take some in the first 10 rounds, as these guys are all considered very tough/impossible signs. Ok, back to the real world. They probably want to get a shout out from BA, when they break down team's drafts. Like Wow the Brewers were very aggressive this year.

They were aggressive last year too, selecting Gatewood and Harrison, after they got Medeiros in the first.

Sox took Cal Smith, 2B from Fort Worth Christian School (TX) in the 33rd round. He is the son of some Sox special assistant (didn't catch the name).
