Given that Joe Gunkel, the guy we gave up for de Aza, is currently 4-2 2.82 for Bowie (AA..and those are his Baysox numbers only), getting Glasnow (5-3 2.43 with AA Altoona) or his Curve teammate Chad Kuhl (8-4 2.61) should be the price the Pirates pay. Kuhl would be a good asking price. Sinkerballer who could be a backend starter.

Not sure Napoli clears waivers in August. As many other posters have pointed out he is a better 2nd half hitter for his career and seems to be heating up. If he gets hot for the next month, I can see a few contenders claiming him if just to block him from going to another team. It might be worth the gamble to he can increase his value and get us a better return. In my opinion I trade him for whatever I can get for him by Friday. Would like to see us bring up as many young guys as we can and give them a shot and prepare for next season.
I would rather give someone like Cecchini two months to show what he can do in the big leagues at either 1B or 3B. Seems to be heating up, great time to call him up!
No one will claim him. Nap's pro rata salary is almost $6mm. If they do, let him be claimed. There's no prospect return coming worth anything close to $6mm In past 10 games Napoli average has risen from .193 to .208. If Sox wait 10 games into August to apply Napoli to waivers I can see a team claiming him if he stays hot. Teams like the Dodgers or Yankees can afford 6 million no problem, just to keep him away from another team.
What are you talking about "There's no prospect return coming worth anything close to $6mm"? 6 million is nothing to the Red Sox, almost any player that could help them next year or in the future is worth 6 million. The only way that 6 million matters to sox is if it gets them under luxury tax line.

Serious question: at this stage, is the $6m worth anything to us? It's pretty much a sunk cost, doesn't matter if we pay it or not. I'd eat all of Nap's salary if it got us anything at all in return. I don't remember where we are with the luxury tax now admittedly $6m would get them close, if not under the luxury tax threshold. I think they were something like $8m over (ADD: before the Victorino deal), but Adam can probably give you more precise numbers.

The $6mm would be huge because the Red Sox still have Koji on the block, potentially. My guess you're realistically looking at a ShaneO type deal. Save $500k to $1mm, get back a AAAA player or a C prospect. A waiver claim is the absolute best case scenario, and is not likely to happen.

You can't just look at numbers and think that equals value. Gunkel was seen as a future reliever or back end starter. He has limited upside based on not having truly elite stuff.

De Aza for a can of warm pop. Done. Just so long as I don't have to see him in John Farrell's annoying lineup card anymore.

Can't we just trade De Aza back for Gunkle?

Can't we just trade De Aza back for Gunkle? Won't happen. Dan Duquette seems to have gotten smarter since he left us.

Duquette was a decent to good GM before the Red Sox. He was a decent to good GM during his Red Sox tenure, and he's a decent to good GM with the Orioles. Perhaps competent is the best word. He certainly made his share of mistakes, but he's made a few good moves here and there too, and his teams are usually pretty competitive.

His teams always seem to overachieve (or at least play greater than the sum of their parts), something the Sox could use right now.
