July 2015 Player of the Month
|
Post by Chris Hatfield on Aug 4, 2015 15:05:35 GMT -5
Please vote above for the player you felt had the best month, and discuss your selection below in the thread! You may use almost any criteria you wish in judging each player's month. The one exception is that we ask that voters ignore a player's prospect status - in other words, please don't vote for a player based on the fact that you think he will be a better major league player down the road. However, to be clear, you may use other criteria in judging the candidates relative to one another that go beyond stats, such as age relative to level and the like. Just don't pick, say, a top 10 prospect over an org guy based solely on that. Voting for this poll will close Thursday at 3 pm. OF Luis Alexander Basabe (LOW): 25 G, 116 PA, 26 H, 5 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 16 R, 11 RBI, 17 BB, 28 K, 10 SB/3 CS, .268/.379/.464 SS Javier Guerra (GRE): 24 G, 108 PA, 37 H, 4 2B, 5 HR, 17 R, 17 RBI, 5 BB, 21 K, 1 SB/3 CS, .366/.398/.554 OF Kevin Heller (SAL): 26 G, 104 PA, 28 H, 4 2B, 3 HR, 11 R, 17 RBI, 19 BB, 18 K, 3 SB/2 CS, .354/.510/.519 2B Yoan Moncada (GRE): 25 G, 119 PA, 30 H, 6 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 23 R, 13 RBI, 14 BB, 23 K, 13 SB/1 CS, .316/.419/.526 1B Sam Travis (POR): 28 G, 123 PA, 38 H, 8 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 12 R, 16 RBI, 11 BB, 16 K, 3 SB, 4 CS, .345/.407/.464 July 2015 stats

Honorable mentions to Andrew Benintendi, Marco Hernandez, and Jerry Downs, who were also given heavy consideration.

I mean org guys are pretty much always very overaged making their stats less meaningful. If so, I will probably always ignore the org guys unless no one is anywhere close to him statistically. I also wouldn't vote for Mookie for player of the week (if we still had those) if he had a week of rehab in Greenville.

Well, I don't think it'd be good to "eliminate" him for it. It's a data point. Just like it wouldn't really be correct to say "I'm eliminating this person from consideration for my vote because he struck out 20 times - I don't care how much better all of his other stats were than everyone else's." versus using strikeouts as one of many data points you'd evaluate in a given week, or something like that. I don't think it's a big deal, if you think it's close, to consider age relative to level though. Let's say Players A and B have close to identical stat lines, and Player A is a 25-year-old in Salem and Player B is an 18-year-old in Greenville, then yeah, you would be nuts not to take that into account. Now take the same players and say that Player A clearly outperformed Player B, then I wouldn't simply vote for Player B regardless. Your task is to figure out where the line is. Also, just FYI: A) We don't and have never put rehabbing (or pseudo-rehabbing, like when Denny Bautista was in Greenville/Salem) players in polls as a rule for the reasons you say - by definition they're not supposed to be at that level. I don't think Heller's situation is directly comparable. and B) There's still Player of the Week - we name it every week in the Weekly Notes on the News Page.

It's tough to judge player of the month when you don't get to see them play. I voted for Guerra, but whose to say he hasn't been a butcher with the glove while Moncada has been a gem? That would certainly sway my voting.
If possible, could you include some defensive metrics if it's easy enough to copy and paste onto here?

There aren't really readily available minor league defensive metrics beyond what you can find on B-Ref as far as I know.
Trust me, Guerra was not a butcher with the glove nor will he ever be.

Moncada had a superb month, despite his defense.

I think the data point ref. is most valid, one data point of many, meaningless unto itself, the Heller/Guerra stat. comparison for July is definitive. Heller is the player.

Heller clearly mashes baseballs despite a nagging thumb injury. As an avid fan, it's tough for me to see why he hasn't been sent up to Portland.
