That is what fans have wanted for years, yet nothing. Ok so its been years now so the details are fuzzy. Yet he killed serial killers, not a certain type of person. Left no evidence and dumped the bodies so they couldn't be found or so he thought. Without him wouldn't killings increase? The brillance of his method was nothing for people to track. Large city with tons of crime, will always have people go missing. There wouldn't be a ton of unsolved murders, just missing serial killers. So I don't see how you'd track that. I have no idea how it ends or should end. He's a sick man yet his code overall did good for society. You don't just end it with him driving a boat into a storm and then show him as a lumberjack. He gets away with it, gets caught or heck maybe he some how stops. Heck maybe he kills himself for breaking Harry's code. So many ways you could go. So I really hope that give us an ending at some point. Yeah, it's been years since I watched as well. IIRC, when they found and identified the Bay Harbor Butcher victims, they were able to link a very large percentage of them to suspicions that they were bad apples, or worse. That's one fact. The other is that Dexter didn't do research to find his victims, nor were they all classic serial killers. Basically, he did his job in forensics and it often led him to people who had killed at least twice and were clearly likely to kill again. That was enough for him.
The final thing is that even serial killers (most) have friends and families who might report them missing. If you have the hypothesis that Doakes was not the BHB, you get the missing persons list and start researching it. Make the investigator a guy who has made a ton of money as the country's most popular true crime writer, so he can hire teams of interns to do this research. That he's a big deal makes him an interesting character, too.
You can do separate research on mobsters and suspected killers who have disappeared but not been reported missing.
The thing is, once you agree that Dexter ought to be caught for story reasons -- and then maybe he does get away with it because a jury won't convict him, or whatever -- you just work backwards from that outcome to bring it about. I just made up the part about the true crime guy having the resources to do a proper investigation.
The way most storytellers work is that they imagine a small number of dramatic scenes or situations that they know would be part of a good story. Ideally, one of them is the ending! For instance (I'm just making this up!), what if a guy felt forced to report his lover to the cops, falsely, for a much greater good? Like, saving a busload of schoolchildren. You work backwards from that to give it a reason. You get maybe three such ideas -- even if they don't seem connected plot-wise -- and you try to see if they can be the big moments in one story.
In many cases, the key moments are simpler and require less plot to manufacture. A lot of writers just sit down and type stuff up, trying to get to big moment 1. Once they've gotten there, they do the same thing to get to big moment 2. And so on.
(I know all this because I ran the program at a literary sci-fi / fantasy conference for years and have heard many, many writers talk about their process.)

If anyone is interested, trakt.tv is a great website for keeping track of shows and movies you've watched and/or collected. I don't know what I'd do without it. Also, Jurassic World was terrible. I hope it kills the series. 2015 Jurassic World or 2018 Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom ? I haven't seen either but my kids didn't like the new one.

So I just found out that Amazon is reportedly working on tv series for both The Dark Tower (written by Stephen King) and for The Wheel of Time (written by Robert Jordan), two of the most epic fantasy stories ever written. Both could be Game of Thrones-like if done correctly. For The Dark Tower, they would have to completely scrap everything done in the worst movie ever made a few years ago to give fans what they deserve. I have not read Wheel of Time, but I may start. It's a 14 book series.
The third series that needs to be finished is the Art trilogy by Clive Barker and then made into a tv series. The Great and Secret Show might be my favorite book.
Also related, The Passage is an apocalyptic vampire-type (not exactly vampires, more like hybrid humans) of tv series that is starting in January. That show is based on a trilogy written by Justin Cronin, which I highly recommend - especially the first book. I'm looking forward to that as well. That will be on Fox, so I'm not very hopeful that it'll be any good.

Interesting because the dark tower the movie was bad. Big budget, good actors and it just sucked. I waited years to watch and just did a few months ago. At the same time the concept was interesting, yet the movie just didn't explain much.
The TV revolution has resulted in a ton more content, just spread out all over the place. I really do like it and Jimed you get me excited talking about game of thrones. Even though I'm 95% convinced I'm going to hate the ending because they had to rush it.

When I was a kid, I used to be really into the Wheel of Time series, but it’s a pretty derivative series and unfortunately my best guess is that the best case scenario is that it’s a B-rate Game of Thrones.

I can't even begin to start about what was wrong with the movie Dark Tower. I actually turned it off I was so disappointed. The books were incredible. The only story I like better is The Stand, which coincidentally is also being released as a tv series next year. The Dark Tower movie was nothing like the books and all they did was take all of the excitement from Dark Tower book fans and destroy it, making it so that non-fans had to be entertained. And since it wasn't entertaining, exactly zero people liked it. If they catered to the book fans *at all*, then the excitement would have spread. But they went for a quick buck and made it very difficult for anyone else to touch the series again. I'm really glad amazon is going to try. A tv series would be the only way to do it justice because there is so much material. And you'd think that a book with an opening line of “The man in Black fled across the Desert, and the Gunslinger followed.” would actually start the movie with that scene. That was required. As far as Game of Thrones goes, I think it's just a showcase of how to do a great tv series with an average book series. JRR Martin basically wrote a giant soap opera in a universe he created. I give him credit for creating that universe but that's about it. Game of Thrones will always be the bar that every tv series will strive to achieve because HBO is just incredible. Any show on network tv will never reach that status, which is why I'm not super excited about The Stand which will be on CBS All Access and have about 1/100th the budget it needs. I hope amazon can reach HBO status in making shows.

I really hope you're wrong. Amazon is spending a ton of money on both this one and the new Lord of the Rings series. They may each be as expensive as Game of Thrones so I imagine they're going to go all out in making something that doesn't flop. The complexity of the story is intriguing. I even read that it could easily justify the necessity of having 15 lead role-type of actors just to do it justice. We'll probably get an idea of what to expect when they start announcing the actors to give us some kind of budget indication.

I only sort of vaguely remember it being decent, with brutally bad special effects even for the time (the "hand of God" setting off the nuke made me belly laugh) but it has half-decent actors in it. ----- Wife and I recently started Breaking Bad and we ate up the first season (which is admittedly just 7 episodes) like candy. Can tell we're going to love it. Then I get to try and convince her to shell out for HBO so we can make a run at getting up to speed on GoT in time for its return, which is probably unlikely.

The 90's Stand miniseries was pretty mediocre at best IMO even with the almost decent cast. You had Molly Ringwald who hadn't done anything memorable since Pretty in Pink, Lieutenant Dan from Forrest Gump and the funny actress who hadn't yet been on Just Shoot Me. The writing was pretty bad from what I remember especially the dialog. I think the Molly Ringwald casting choice was for her name only because it was a horrible miscast and her acting was cringeworthy. And then Rob Lowe played the deaf mute guy which is just kind of funny. Especially since it almost looks like they ripped off Dumb and Dumber with these two: It did look like multiple emmy winner worthy compared to Dark Tower though. If you never read the book, I imagine it would seem better. But I still found it disappointing. I admittedly will never be happy with a Stand production more than likely.

Breaking Bad goes quick, just depends how much TV you watch. Game of Thrones will take longer, the episodes are longer because they were made without commercials. That extra 10 plus minutes per episode really adds up and they have some episodes that are over an hour. Nevermind it has more episodes.

So I just watched The Favourite. If you can only watch 1 movie that released in 2018, make it this one. It's an absolute MASTERPIECE in so many ways. It sounds beautiful, it looks otherworldly, the story and dialogues are engaging, the acting is sublime and Lanthimos is just the goddamn man. His movies avoid being the classic artsy-fartsy weird stuff nobody is going to enjoy by just being ALIEN. I love it.
If you can watch 2 movies, then make it The Favourite and also Mandy. Mandy is a kickass experience.

Mandy is a kickass experience. I'm pretty much with you on The Favourite -- it's my #9 flick of a fairly strong year.
Whereas Mandy is #79 out of 85 (a really low number for me; I'm going to call it quits for the time being at 95 when I've been averaging 112). The first half is just stupid and ludicrous if you're not a fan of horror movies. Which is to say, the stuff that's supposed to scare or engage you bears no relationship to reality, and doesn't try. It's just trying to give over-the-top versions of horror movie tropes that were on the borders of reality to begin with.
I actually hated it until Nick Cage went over the top of the top, starting midway. When the script warrants it, that's always great. Rather to my shock, I ended up giving it 3 stars ("liked it") at DVD.Netflix. Just the line about his shirt made the rental worthwhile. And it is very striking visually.

The movie that is way overdue. It's about societal genocide and starting at about 06:00 should be mandatory viewing in all high schools.

Okay so I never really post anywhere, but the main Sox board... But I'd love to get this movie thread going...
This morning I stumbled upon a few movies that I'd consider hidden gems on the streaming circuit.
I was in the mood for above average, smart action\thrillers. I think I hit the jackpot.
The first movie was "Den of Thieves" starring a gristled looking Americanized Gerard Butler. Now I know Butler is known mostly for formalized character work in the "Olympus has Fallen" mode, but he can be kind of a chameleon for example "360". Den of Thieves is like a modernized "Heat" without the star power of Dinero and Pacino. It's about a special forces trained gang that trys to take down the Los Angeles branch of the Federal Reserve. The move has a lot of automatic weapon Street shoot outs similar to "Heat"s final act. The action is wrapped around a decent story with some good acting. It's not an Oscar contender, but then again it's not that kind of movie.
The next film I watched was a total surprise "The Foreigner" which was one of the best genre movies I've seen in a long time. It starred a weathered Jackie Chan playing a heartbroken father, who has a muddled past that includes being trained by both the US and China after the fall of Saigon. I know you guys hear Jackie Chan and you think "Rush Hour" slapstick humor and crazy martial Arts. Believe me when I say this movie is the furthest thing from that. Chan plays the role with an emotional seriousness that you've never seen from him. This is by far the best role and acting of his legendary career. Pierce Brosnan adds star power and solid chops as a former IRA agent tied and twisted to the bombing that killed Chan's daughter. With nothing to lose Chan systematically breaks down Brosnan getting the names of the terrorists responsible for his daughters murder. This movie is a real gem, great acting, great story and the action is totally believable with Chan insisting as usual to do his own stunts and to use no cgi. I highly recommend this film, don't let the names Brosnan and Chan make you think of the Hollywood, bad acting shoot em ups. Give the "Foreigner" a chance you'll be pleasantly surprised. I compare it to "Man on Fire" one of the best revenge movies.
The last two movies I'd recommend are "Sweet Virginia" starring Jon Bernthal, who is best known from The Walking Dead and The Punished. Sweet Virginia is a slow burning indie thriller that burns a bit hotter before the end and is filled with tension because of a great score.
And
"The Harvest" starring Michael Shannon. I don't want to say too much because the twists and turns and Samatha Morton channeling Kathy Bates in "Misery" are tremendous. It reminds me of early Stephen King and is more down the lines of a medical thriller/horror movie. There's nothing supernatural, but plenty of terror and a great story. The director John McNaughton insists on using celluloid film as opposed to digital and a full orchestral score. It really pays off creating a atmosphere of tension and dread... Plus the young man who's playing the lead role is obsessed with baseball.
Sorry for the long post I just wanted to get things going again in this thread. With so many avenues of entertainment it's become difficult to wade through the noise and find memorable movies. If your like me you really love finding these overlooked gold nuggets and suggestions from everyone on a forum like this can lead you to some great films.

I watched part of the Avengers Endgame and I'm guessing most here would enjoy the movie. Seemed well done but was a bit confusing for me because I really don't know the story or characters so switching back and forth between unrelated (to me) scenes was confusing and I had no idea who were the good guys and bad guys or what their objectives were It's pretty much not my genre so I only watched about a half hour but like I said, I'm guessing most would enjoy it.

Hollywood has become scared to do any big budget movies that aren't Marvel, Disney, or part of a franchise. I want to go to the movies and the drive-in but I litterally can't find movies to go see.

But that's about 1/10th the number of movies you need to see to fully understand the Avenger movies. Maybe even a smaller percentage than that. I also will never watch another Star Wars movie and that was my favorite trilogy of all time about 30 years ago.

I also will never watch another Star Wars movie and that was my favorite trilogy of all time about 30 years ago. Okay, can we talk Star Wars for a minute? I watched and really liked the original trilogy and had an appropriate high school obsession (think 1996), but I have come to resent Return of the Jedi a little as too long, "commercial" and repetitive of the prior movies. When the second trilogy came out, I watched Phantom Menace opening weekend and it was garbage. Watched AotC when it came out and it was more trash. I never bothered to watch whatever the 3rd one is to this day. I'm a grown man now so my high school obsession is over and while I looked forward to The Force Awakens my anticipation was moderated. It was pretty good, but was more fan service than I liked. Really, a 3rd death star? I watched Last Jedi and really liked it; despite the digression on the casino planet I liked the pace and it had some incredible movie-making moments (the jump into the ship, the salt planet visuals). I get why people think it had problems, but I don't understand how THAT the movie "ruins" Star Wars for folks? There are 40 years of problematic movies that have eroded the initial legacy. The last unambiguously good Star Wars movie came out in 1980. What exactly has been ruined? I'll go see Rise of Skywalker (and am excited my daughter is excited about the movies; this will be her first in theaters), but I don't get the recent hate.

But that's about 1/10th the number of movies you need to see to fully understand the Avenger movies. Maybe even a smaller percentage than that. I also will never watch another Star Wars movie and that was my favorite trilogy of all time about 30 years ago. Oh don't get me started on George Lucas. The only two great Star Wars movies were New Hope and Empire. The rest are utter trash that people still watch for some reason. And the two great ones certainly weren't great because of the dialog or acting. When the 7th movie was made, there was a lot of hype that it matched the greatness but it was still trash. I haven't watched any of them since. Talk about the biggest sell out of all-time. The Rise of Skywalker will be the 9th movie. There was also Rogue One and the Solo movie, the Clone Wars animated movie, a holiday special, two Ewok movies, at least another trilogy has been planned and approximately 276 episodes in 5 different television series. Part of me wonders if any of this would have ever happened if Lucas didn't luck out by hiring a breakout star in Harrison Ford. Because Lucas on his own is cringeworthy. The dialog is painful and the stories are convoluted. He cares more about selling stuffed animals than making a good movie.

I saw the Joker but don't want to give out movie details.
Well done, great acting and very watchable, not at all what I was expecting. I thought the first half dragged a little more than it needed to but otherwise liked the movie.
