I don't know how I missed this movie in the 80s, but I just watched True Stories (1986) made by David Byrne of Talking Heads. I cannot tell if it influenced David Lynch or David Lynch influenced Byrne. I think a little of both. If you love Lynch like I do, you'll love True Stories as well. It's less dark but just as intelligent, interesting and amusing.

Is their anyone more fallinlovable than Rachel MacAdams in the Notebook? Be honest One of the best love story movies of all-time for sure. Just my two cents but I'd put Julianne Hough Safe Haven and Kristen Dunst in Wimbledon right up there. Heck if you like a little crazy Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook because it's Jennifer Lawrence.

Some good ones and I haven't seen them all but the Notebook and Rachel will always be at the top for me. Not just a well written story with really good acting but she is just adorable.

For movie characters, I've always liked Kelly LeBrock in Weird Science and for TV, Jane Seymour as Dr. Quinn.

The family that prays together....
Right now, I'm watching Ozark, my wife is watching John Wick 1, my oldest daughter is watching Descendants 3 and my youngest daughter is watching Maleficent 2.

Not a movie suggestion, just a statement that rings true.:
Bill James Online @billjamesonline · 9m My polls today about which movie star had a greater career had an obvious recency bias, more than I get in comparing baseball players. I suppose this is because BB careers can be objectively measured, which locks in their value, whereas screen career evaluation is more subjective

Can't believe I am suggesting this and let me preface this by saying I am not a Jackie Chan or Pierce Brosnan fan but.... The Foreigner is a pretty good movie. Good story line, enough mystery and the fight stuff isn't totally stupid.

Power of the Dog took home most of the awards at the Golden Globes last night (yeah yeah, I know we're supposed to ignore it but it's still an award). West Side Story as well so those two are probably the front runners. Variety has their best picture predictions out: variety.com/feature/2022-oscars-best-picture-predictions-1234965329/Here are my thoughts on the top 5: Belfast - well written, well acted, well directed. I don't think it's better than Power of the Dog though, but I could feel the raw emotion of someone growing up in 1960s Belfast during the beginning of The Troubles. The Power of the Dog - the type of movie you need to watch twice because every scene had a purpose in the movie but you don't realize it until you see how the movie concludes. The depth of this movie was really good and the Montana scenery led to some great cinematography, but admittedly it was slow. I think this is the front-runner, but does the academy still have an anti-streamer bias (i.e. Roma losing to Green Book)? Dune - this is so much better than the David Lynch version. Much like the early LoTR movies, it belongs at the party but won't win because the story hasn't ended yet. West Side Story - it really was a well done film, wouldn't surprise me if it wins. Rachel Zegler was fantastic in her debut, Baby Driver was fine, they creatively got Rita Moreno into the movie without making it seem forced, the sets and cinematography were great. Too bad it bombed, but also... was a remake needed? For that reason I don't want it to win. Licorice Pizza - this was a fun movie, inevitably it'll get compared to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood given the directors and the vibe of a throwback to 70s LA lifestyle, it's just Paul Thomas Anderson's style instead of Quentin's style. Could make a run for it, but like Quentin I think PTA comes up short for the win. It's not my favorite PTA, but I enjoyed him doing a lighter film for a change. What have others thought about the award season movies so far?

What have others thought about the award season movies so far? FYI, Power of the Dog was fully filmed in New Zealand, though it was certainly a convincing Montana to me. What an impressive country to film in (thinking of the variety in LOTR too) I didn't see a lot of the contenders, but enjoyed both POTD and Dune and felt good about them both. I'll add King Richard was far more positive than I anticipated and Will Smith and the actresses for both Williams sisters were great. Way off track, but for the parents in the room, Sing 2 was more enjoyable for me than most kid fare (especially sequels), and it's GORGEOUS and bright and colorful.

Eh, might as well have one of these threads. For anyone who's slightly into the comic book movie thing, this dropping this week has me salivating (NOTE: NOT REMOTELY SAFE FOR WORK): Here's the clean one: Just some closure on this, I finally saw this movie this past November. I do not watch many movies. Lol.

Who has watched The Matrix 4? Personally, I'm glad that the story of Trinity and Neo will continue. I hope the next movie is better than this one.

I thought Matrix 4 was rather bad. Just rented Dune and I can't wait for the next one.

Since it was brought up ages ago in this thread, if you think there's any chance you might like Top Gun Maverick, I'd venture to guess you'll end up loving it. Solid mix of nostalgia, ridiculous practical action sequences, good acting, and emotional weight. It hits all the best beats of the original without the bad movie baggage; it's a legitimately good story and pacing. Pretty solid military chops, with only a few "suspend your belief" moments that all get "explained". Jennifer Connolly is excellent, far more fully formed than Charlie in 1. Highly recommend seeing in theaters while it's still there.
Fully loved it, I've seen it twice in theaters (ScreenX is a 3-wall kind of theater near me, which was extra great because the director filmed all the flight and many outdoor scenes with 3 cameras to make it all real surround).
