The Big Lebowski was a fun watch. I generally like movies with plot twists.
Still on the plate: Barry Lyndon, Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Once Upon A Time In America, Ran, Solaris(1972 version), Stalker, Dunkirk & The General (1998).
After that, I'll check out soxjim's list while I'm waiting for baseball season.
I have the action movies recommended by umass but that's my wife's favorite genre and right now she's getting up at 4AM everyday to go jogging. lol, We've started to watch Atomic Blonde 3 times before she faded out and we still have 40 minutes left to go. She'll stop when she gets under 43 kilos, getting close.
Does anybody know of any animated (but not anime) movies that are not Disney, Pixar or Dreamworks ? I found one, 'Epic'.

lol, I've seen a part of PF, Urge Overkill uses the movie for his video 'Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon'. Well it was released on the soundtrack to the film. EDIT: As a single that is. They recorded their cover two years prior and released it on an EP before Tarantino grabbed it for the movie and soundtrack.

Since I like the song, I've seen the music video quite often (my version is slightly different than the one above, it shows Urge singing the song at a bar interspersed with movie cuts). It shows none of from the time she sat down or the nose candy) Seeing the movie though changed my perception of the video. I had always thought the song was about her but it's clearly not. Soon happened long before.

I've now watched several movies mentioned one way or another in this thread.
The three I liked the best so far are
Ran Once Upon a Time in America Dunkirk
Not necessarily in that order.

Barry Lyndon is the highest-ranked movie on my list that I haven't seen. I'm waiting until I get a chance to see it on a big screen. Mad Max: Fury Road is, I think, unquestionably the greatest / best action movie of all time. Nowhere in its class but still terrific are the two John Wick movies. A lot of Japanese animation is terrific and doesn't use the tropes of anime. Everything from Studio Ghibli (in particular, films by Hikao Miyazaki, e.g. Spirited Away, and Isao Takahta, e.g. Grave of the Fireflies, one of the great animated films of all time and a serious contender for the most heart-wrenching film ever made, and the more recent The Tale of the Princess Kaguya). This year's Your Name., too. The major producer of quality animated films beyond the big three you mention is Laika, who specialize in stop-motion. Coraline, ParaNorman, and Kubo and the Two Strings are all various degrees of excellent. (Haven't seen The Boxtrolls). Cartoon Saloon is an Irish company whose first two films, The Book of Kells and Song of the Sea, are amazing. Eagerly awaiting the release of of their third, The Breadwinner, which is an Oscar nominee for this year. Reel FX is an American studio that had a great second outing, The Book of Life. Great double bill with Coco. GKids is a U.S. distributor that handles Cartoon Saloon and some Studio Ghibli, plus other random foreign animation (I can vouch for a few, most notably My Life as a Zucchini). They usually grab an Oscar nomination or two, and in general the Oscar noms are a good place to look for less well-know stuff. SG has branched out to working with others, e.g., The Red Turtle, from last year's nominees and another excellent choice. Avoid the trailer, which gives too much away!

SG has branched out to working with others, e.g., The Red Turtle, from last year's nominees and another excellent choice. Avoid the trailer, which gives too much away! Bold, I was the perfect age for that title with 1957 Old Yeller (8). Now I'm too much of a cynic to likely change my feelings there. My kids have probably watched it 20 times. For me, Barry Lyndon was the movie on your lists that I liked the least but it's a double edged sword kind of thing. On the one hand I thought Kubrick's slowing the pace was brilliant in that it put you into the pace that was likely the norm of the time so you felt like you were there. On the other hand, it pretty much turned a 45 minute story into a three hour marathon. Since I'm used to today's pace, I was pretty much bored with the slower pace. The other problem I had was that I thought the main character, played by Ryan O'Neil had little screen presence. He was neither likable nor dislikable. He was more or less just there. I found little entertainment value in the movie. I guess, I appreciated it but wasn't entertained, I'd be interested in your take. The Mad Max group and the like aren't my cup of tea although my wife might like them. I'll get Fury and see if she likes it. For the best picture nominees, from the trailers, other than Dunkirk, the only two that interested me were the one about Churchil and the one about The Post and the Pentagon Papers. The Post will likely win, the Academy seems to be in love with Meryl Streep. I also now have Wonder Woman because it got so much press for being snubbed. I was able to find a ranked list of animated movies somewhere on the internet and I now have about 40 new ones so the kids will be entertained for a while. Of the ones you mention. I had Coraline and now have Kubo and the Two Strings, Coco, Boxtrolls & Book of Life. I let you know how they liked them. Right now they're watching a bunch of Lego & Smurf movie and I've found 4 new Ice Age movies. I'll check out the others you suggested, thanks. We pretty much use the animated movies as a reward system. They're both honor students in the toughest private school on the island so, they get a lot of reward time. lol, the school kind of blows me away, in math for example, my 2nd grader is doing long division and my forth grader is doing geometry (peripheries, areas, etc). That's way ahead of the pace I had when I was their age. Haha, philosophy was a first grade spelling word and they get spelling in three languages. Prior to their going to school, (kindergarten time) we spent a lot of one on one time with Brainy Baby, Barney (the Barney song still periodically plays in my head), Sesame Street, Dora, etc. Thanks for taking the time....

So my wife has never seen the Star Wars prequels, and we haven't seen any of the new ones. Despite my protestations that she's probably better off skipping the prequels, she's insisting we watch them all in order of release (lost this debate as well, trying to suggest machete order. #marriage). Anyway, it was funny to me watching Ep 4 last night that the old special effects held up so much better than the awful, computer-generated new ones. It's not even close.
Also, saw Whiskey Tango Foxtrot with Tina Fey recently and enjoyed it. Wasn't what I was expecting at all from a movie starring Fey and produced by Lorne Michaels. Has some funny parts but I wouldn't call it a comedy.

Haha, it was what you typed that I did the trailer thing. Because of the military nomenclature of the name (ie, wtf), I had figured it was a war movie but your Tina Fey comment caused me to look at her bio to figure out who she was. After seeing that she was Saturday Night Live I decided I should look at the trailer because you also said it wasn't a comedy.
ADD: After the movie I googled the China gold thing they mentioned, I wasn't aware of that. So, Obama was selling our troops. Wonderful.

It wasn't a great movie by any means, but highly entertaining and very interesting. Something different and it was based on a true story. Was one of those movies you expect that you might not even finish it, but turns out to pleasantly surprise you. Would have been happy if I spent 30 bucks at the movies to see it. Was a lot more entertaining than Dunkirk and that crazy movie called Mother. I will take entertaining or better acting any day of the week.

For those of you who are into Star Wars, two movies, 'Space Balls' & 'Ice Pirates' are hilarious. Mel Brooks generally is a genius. The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, Men in Tights, and the criminally underrated History of the World Part I are all great.

I just finished 'The Post' and thought it was well done, particularly for a 'dry' subject. I've now seen 5 of the nominees for best pic. The Post would get my vote. If I had never seen Private Ryan, Dunkirk would have gotten my vote.

Tend to be really glossy (and I am no fan of Churchill, so I don’t need more hagiography). Phantom Thread is by far the best movie of the year. It’s great. But it has also been a bad, bad year. I’ve seen few good movies, much less great movies. To the best comedy thread above: Some Like It Hot is my favorite comedy ever, I think. I also love Chaplin and Keaton. All their movies are awesome.

Ladybird looks like another teeny bopper movie. It's just not what I'm into. I really could care less about the trials and tribulations of being a teenager in a middle class environment. If it wins the best pic Oscar, I'll probably watch it, otherwise, I'd have to be really bored. Haha, I even watched Birdman....
ADD: I've seen every Oscar Best Pic winner. Back in the day, Blockbuster used to have all of them. Right now I have 49 of them on my hard drive, I'll get the rest someday.
In the category you don't like, I liked Spotlight.
