Best of luck JF. Cancer Sucks. Kick it's ass.
I wonder if it was found out during his recent surgery. Hopefully they caught it early.
Again, good luck John, best wishes to he and his family.

Apparently it's very treatable, which is great.
Not to be crass (and I wasn't advocating for this anyway) but he definitely won't be fired any time soon now.

I wonder if it was found out during his recent surgery. Hopefully they caught it early. It was. And Lester's because he got in a fender bender. Horrifying to think of the luck involved in these things.

Horrifying to think of the luck involved in these things. Great to hear that they caught it early and that it is "very treatable". The Lester case was exactly what made me think of it. Never lucky to be diagnosed of course, but that hernia may of saved his life. Amazing.

Jesus. As others have said, glad to hear that it was apparently caught very early. Still, very scary for him and his family I am sure.

1. Stage One. 2. He's otherwise in excellent condition (at least it appears). 3. Boston - great docs, hospitals. 4. Great family and employer support system. 5. Optimistic attitude, legitimate tough guy.
Gotta love his chances.

I'm a big John Farrell fan. As a man, as a coach and as a skipper of the ballclub, he's Grade A. If anyone can kick the crap out of cancer, it's him. Here's to wishing him and his family victory off the field.

Never a good thing, of course, but given the stage the prognosis should be very good.

I met him when he came and answered questions at the local SABR chapter meeting, which, given the size of the crowd, was itself a stand-up thing to do, but he came across as a stand-up guy on top of that. No wonder that his players and ex-players (like Victorino) are reacting with so much support. And no doubt that he will beat this.
Like many on this board, I haven't liked him much as a manager, but he is by all reports a sharp baseball mind and an asset to any organization. I hope that when he does beat it, there will be a place for him higher up.
(In fact, it strikes me now that he's very likely too much of a "player's manager"; too unwilling to push them out of their conventional comfort zones towards sabermetric wisdom, and --seeing himself too much in others, which is something we all do -- too trusting of players to manage their own psyches when some of them need various sorts of handling, whether it be encouragement or a kick in the butt. I can't imagine him, for instance, reaming a player out for sacrificing on his own when it wasn't the analytically smart thing to do.)

Nor, is it the time to talk about permanently replacing him as manager. For an organization like the Red Sox, the message has to be clear - Cancer can't take away your job.

This would've ruined a winning season, let alone the one we're already having. Wish the best for Farrell and his loved ones in what will be scary times.
"I found out about this before the meeting through Hanley [Ramirez]," designated hitter David Ortiz said. "I was in the training room. Hanley came to me, crying, to tell me about John's situation."

Regardless of how any of us felt about him as a manager, from all accounts he's a great guy. I saw him speak at Saberseminar last year, which is a fundraiser for the Jimmy Fund where all speakers are there on a volunteer basis. He was candid with the crowd and insightful, and came off as just a likable guy. He would've been there for this year's seminar next weekend, too. Makes the whole event take on a whole lot more meaning. Best of luck on your road to recovery, John.

I just want to echo everyone's sentiment that my thoughts and prayers are with John. As a Red Sox fan, and sports fan in general, it is easy to make sports your life. We as people have our own personal battles and sometimes just a long week and look to sports to distract us. This has been a long and hard to watch season, but hearing this news is the reminder that sports is just that, a game! We often forget that players and staff have real lives and just reminds us how important it is to appreciate life! I am grateful as I know most are that they caught this early and it is very treatable. Lets build the next great Red Sox team, and have John win his second WS very soon!
