It's pretty amazing to have five homegrown guys--four of whom are pre-arb and a fifth signed at an under-market contract--put up seasons like this and yet the team has done so poorly.

One of these players is not like the others. If, by "homegrown", it is defined as a player who was drafted or was an International sign, Brock Holt, who was traded here in the Melanson deal, does not meet the criteria.
I'm going with Bogaerts, though Mookie deserves a lot of votes.

I could expand the definition of home grown to any player that has significant minor league development with the redsox, presumably spanning more than 1 level. Holt already had MLB time with Pitt, needing perhaps just 1 year of additional development. That said, something could be said for all 4 of the others being homegrown POY

I'm going with Bogaerts, though Mookie deserves a lot of votes. There was internal discussion about whether or not to include Holt. We decided that, because they traded for him while still a prospect and he spent a year and a half in the minors before really sticking that it made sense to include him as a player who was developed by the Red Sox - at least at some level. Perhaps the title of the award doesn't quite get the effect we were trying to reach - in that case, I'd say to disregard the award's name and to simply vote based on the critera. I'm assuming Betts and Bogaerts will make that semantics anyway.

To my mind, Betts vs. Bogaerts is close enough that it could well change in the final 12 games. But I'm voting for X anyway.

First half-second half. Since Holt came out of nowhere last year, and, once again, helped carry a dysfunctional team on his back early this season, earning his All-Star selection, (while X and Mookie were still establishing their worth), he gets my vote. Heck, they all get my vote. What a remarkable foundation to build upon.
