I've been reading about this Groome prospect for a minute. He is tall and a hard thrower. I wonder if he will be around at 12. At this time of year, I'm comfortable predicting he'll go between 1st and 100th.

He could be the pick come June but there is no law or anything that was passed that says the Red Sox have to draft him or something.

It's just a bill so far The only thing worth doing right now is making/keeping a watch list of guys who look promising. The complexion of the draft is obviously going to change a good deal.

A little football shake up here. ESPNs 8th rated prospect Brandon Mcllwain (probably high) has decided to enroll early at South Carolina to play football and baseball and forgo the draft. On the flip side Kyler Murray from last years draft is transferring from Texas A&M and rumored to be looking at JuCos to try the draft in June.

I saw Murray and the other QB (Allen) decided to transfer from A&M. Coach Sumrlin better find out what the offensive coordinator is doing wrong quick, or his program will dissolve quickly. Everyone wanted Kyler Murray, including all 30 MLB teams. If he actually is thinking of going to junior college, he would be an interesting possibility for anyone in the June draft.

I'm going to go with Ryan Boldt too. He was the #2 prospect on the Cape last summer, has a good pedigree (nothing scares me more in drafts than later risers), and has solid tools across the board. I will be very surprised if he doesn't at least have a decade+ career as a major league regular.

Boss, thanks for the link, that's great.... I remember in your Norbit years you followed the draft probably better than anyone here on this site. Looks as though Quantrill and Sheffield sons are in the top 50 according to the BA link. Just tried to dig a little deeper without much success, are Lawson or Lewis baseball sons?
And was wondering, is there a link to success in the Majors for first generation sons who were ranked highly in the draft, who actually delivered, meaning actually delivered careers beyond Griffey Jr? Anecdotal evidence is a memory spray-chart for me, is there any data out there that anyone has seen to quantify 2d generation success vs taking someone without pedigree....

Wow. This Will Benson kid looks like a monster. 6'6 athletic OF LHB. Never heard of him before this list. Talk about potential, he will be a good one to follow. Does the Duke commitment say anything about his intelligence? Always helps to have a brain.

Jordan Sheffield is not the son of Gary Sheffield. I don't know if they are even related to be honest though some people have said their dad might be cousin with him or something. His brother is in the Cleveland system and he is pretty good too. As for the success rate big league bloodlines I haven't seen a study done on that but my personal opinion is that it's overrated, I'd rather focus on the player's ability than his last name.

After watching Hanley for a season, we may need to send him for all 3 also.

This Cleveland Blog says that's a myth. wow, there are still a ton of sites saying they are his nephews. But here is a 2013 story quoting one of them. "[Their dad] Travis’ cousin, Tony Sheffield, was a second-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox in 1992. Even their mother, Misty Sheffield, had experience as a softball player at Tullahoma. But they are not related to former major league all-star Gary Sheffield. “We get someone asking us that at least once a day,” Jordan said. “And there was a reporter that mistakenly wrote that once, which I think is part of the problem.”" usatodayhss.com/2013/tullahoma-pitchers-mound-features-two-aces-from-one-familyThe dad's cousin hit .228 .297 .325 .622 in 5 minor league season

Boldt isn't even a consensus 1st rd pick this year, why not take a player with a higher ceiling Like the man said, I'll take a solid Cape League prospect any day of the week. Boldt has a Position that is solidified. Boldt is a contact hitter with gap power. He excelled when moved to the leadoff position with a high .obpct and low K rate which is also a premium in todays game. Every year the Sox and others draft players at one Position then try to move them to another. See Bogaerts, Bard and the talk now is Devers and Moncada switching positions. Although Boldt has not shown much power, I'll say again the Value lyes as a leadoff hitter and a plus defender. If you want to develop Power Hitters you save your Money as a MLB GM. You Buy Power and You Buy ACE Starting Pitching like DD has done this season.
