I really hope Barnes is the one who get sent to AAA when they decide to add another position player and I'm not reacting to the homer he gave up. I just think he's the least valuable arm in the pen.

I generally don't engage in this, but this game has been managed by an incompetent. Probably left Wright in to "get the win", had what 6th best reliever to face Astros top of the order?

JF is truly baffling. Also hitting JBJ 9th still is a bit silly.

Hanging curves aren't going to cut it, it's true. He was working the edges but screwed that one up. Might be overconfidence, but more likely just poor command. You watch Ross work and it's all about keeping the ball away from the fat part of the bat, setting hitters up and knocking them down. Barnes isn't there yet.

I'm glad the offense can score 10 runs on any given night, because if we had to win close games consistently, that would be problematic.

Why the hell did Farrell not pinch hit for Hanigan there?

I'm glad the offense can score 10 runs on any given night, because if we had to win close games consistently, that would be problematic. Let's remember, though, that the reason the Sox have scored all these runs in the last few games is horrible pitching on the part of the opposition. You can see on the game summaries all the balls right down the middle that the Sox have clocked. Let's see if they can find a way to pull out this game against what should be the best late-inning pitching that Houston can offer.

With the off days coming up Thursday and the following Monday, I think O'Sullivan will be sent down after Sunday for Marco. When they need the 5th starter again, they'll have to see what or who they need the most. But, I agree I think Barnes if a reliever is sent down.

The record with Farrell in one run games has to be pretty pitiful. He barely does his job in these close games.

He left in Wright way too long after he clearly lost it and then inexplicably let Hanigan bat in the eighth. Im not sure what exactly John Farrell does. He is the definition of an empty suit. He is supposed to be a pitching coach and you have our god damn second baseman as the one to fix Price's mechanics?

Alex Speier @alexspeier 38s38 seconds ago Barnes said no regrets about curveball to Springer, who'd swung/misses badly at one earlier in the AB. RHHs had been 1-8 w/3 Ks vs Barnes CB

He deserves more rope than the rest of the rotation

Alex Speier @alexspeier 4m4 minutes ago Barnes went so far as to say that if Hanigan hadn't called for a curve, he would have shook (shaken?) to it.

Matt Barnes is basically Alexi Ogando. You can't give important innings to relievers prone to the long ball. Just get rid of him quick!

ummm... Wright has been our best starter this year.... He deserves more rope than the rest of the rotation Exactly. And about Barnes, well maybe it was to see what he had in these close games, it's not like he's a AAAA vet who's beyond hope, he could be a key cog in the bullpen. Besides, I remember people calling out Farrell for using Tazawa over Barnes so yeah, there's that.

Why would you do that when you have a proven, ground ball generating, RHH shutting, rested reliever in Carson Smith? Add: And man, I've been on record for saying that Barnes is a terrible pitcher. He's a mop up guy at best.

I just think he's the least valuable arm in the pen. It's refreshing on this board to see a fact stated as an opinion rather than vice versa. He's the 8th reliever they are currently carrying for reasons that are actually hard to defend. There's zero question of that. Why you warm that guy up when your starter is melting down in the 5th instead of Carson Smith or Robbie Ross (who has arguably been their best reliever) is a mystery. Why you leave him in to pitch the 6th in a tie game when you have five stud relievers sitting in the pen (plus a LOOGY who can grab you an out or two if needed) is a bigger mystery. It's neither defensible nor classifiable as remotely competent. I think it was about 1985 that Bill James wrote a piece about the stupidity of treating tie scores as if they were low-leverage situations, something Farrell also did to lose the Cuevas game. At least we can hope that BJ is sending off apoplectic e-mails.
