San Diego must've been really pissed the Sox drafted Groome to shake them down for Neo. Probably knew the Sox were in it to win it this year and knew there was no pitching available so they were adamant about getting their top pitching prospect, since they missed out on Groome. 1/2 kidding.

On the other half... San Diego held all the cards, and they probably did have a competing bid. Texas was said to be hot on the trail of Pomeranz. That made it easy to sit back and let the bidding happen. No need to be pissed off, they were in the drivers seat from the get go. The Sox weren't going to trade their #3 for 6 months of a 36 year-old Hill, as good as he's been. Groom - like Pomeranz I might add - is a big guy, 6' 6", and Kopech is 6' 3" and probably over 200 lbs. at this point. We probably need to qualify Dombrowski's addiction to hard throwers. He likes them big.

Was reading San Diego's forum last night & they were happy when they thought AE was "headlining" a package. A lot of them were disappointed when it was a 1-1. They also think AE is in high-A. Maybe DD told them he was in high-A. The consensus is now, wait till 2019, we're going to be great!

If anyone is wondering when we will see Groome in a game, Trey Ball signed on June 19, 2013 and debuted July 29, 2013. Not saying its the same timetable, but I wouldn't expect to see him on the mound anytime soon.

Some best-case scenario comps for his progress towards MLB. All guys drafted at age 18 except where noted. * means they didn't pitch their draft year.
Josh Beckett (1999, #2 pick), drafted at 19*, debuted at 21, in September. Zach Greinke (2002, 6) debuted at 20, late May. Scott Kazmir (2002, 15), age 20, late August. Clayton Kershaw (2006, 7), age 20, late May. Madison Bumgarner (2007,10), drafted at 17*, debuted at 19, September. [Dylan Bundy (2011, 4), debuted at 19 in September after not pitching at 18, but was that smart?]
Obviously I'm skipping over a lot of top 15 picks who either got to MLB at 22 or later (Homer Bailey, Taillon) or never at all.
The interesting thing is that neither age when drafted nor whether they pitched after signing seems to matter in terms of years to MLB. Every HS pitcher (top 15 picks from 1998 on) who got to MLB earlier than his age 22 season debuted two years after being drafted (except Bundy). The two guys who had rookie seasons at age 20 were drafted at 18 and pitched that year.
So if Groome is the absolute real deal, he could conceivably debut at age 19 in September of 2018, like Bumgarner, and join the rotation early the next year at age 20, like Greinke and Kershaw. That's the best-case scenario. I think we'd all still be happy if he had his rookei season in 2020 at age 21.
I think Kopech is in MLB in 2018. Whose job does he take?

Look at those forearms, wrists, and hands... Groome has a big frame. Get him in professional shape, and he'll certainly look the part.

As the typical paranoid Sox fan I have to admit Espinoza's unimpressive performance this year had me worried. The fairly large drop in velocity and command brought back memories of the stress fracture in his pitching elbow.

The fairly large drop in velocity and command brought back memories of the stress fracture in his pitching elbow. On the latest podcast, the guys put up a good argument that fatigue is what led to the drop in velocity. All of the prospect evaluators (Keith Law, MLB.com, Baseball America, etc) still generally had AE as a top 20 prospect, even with mediocre numbers this season. Doesn't sound like any scout is too worried about him.

A prospect is fun to watch, but trading him for a sure thing in the Majors is never a losing deal.

im so excited for this kid. Back to back years with amazing picks. Groome and Benintendi. Moncada also only 21 and Kopech 20. Those 4 guys should be untouchable. Devers should be packaged right now for Jose Hernandez or Julio Teheran.

I wouldn't trade for Jose Hernandez even if it was for our lowest rated prospect! I meant Fernandez!!!! Please look at the standings and tell me why the Marlins, very much in the playoff hunt and actually tied with the Mets for the 2nd Wild Card, would want to trade one of the best pitchers in baseball (yeah, even I'd trade Anderson Espinoza for Fernandez!) for a Single A prospect right now. Newsflash, the Marlins want to win, too. They don't exist for the sole purpose of sending Fernandez to the Red Sox so the Sox can win.

It's funny these deadline signings happen every year, and people still get upset about it ending that way every year.
Welcome to Boston, Jason.
