Castillo placed on waivers

Castillo getting the Allen Craig treatment. Assuming he clears waivers, he comes off the 40-man and his salary is no longer considered for luxury tax purposes, which frees up space to add salary.

That all makes sense. I can't imagine that he'll be picked up at that price, and the team will have a lot more flexibility.

Damn, I forgot about this part. So it's literally just a cash loss at this point. I think this makes hime more moveable with a payoff, especially since the acquiring team doesn't have to put him on the 40 right away

I feel as though there has to be more to the story. I wish the Red Sox would have played him in a handful of games at the major league level before putting him through waivers.

Should save approx. $5.9mm this year (excluding luxury tax implications), plus $10.36mm per year going forward.

I have the Red Sox at approx. $202mm, including benefits, etc., or approx. $13mm over the luxury tax threshold. The Red Sox tax rate this year is 30%, as a two-consecutive-year offender.
Therefore, waiving Castillo will save almost $1.8mm in luxury tax penalties this year.

Sox will pay more to Rusney, Craig and Panda, for not playing, then they would have had to pay Lester who keeps showing up. Hanley will probably be next.

Give Dombrowki credit: he understands sunk costs.

Give Dombrowki credit: he understands sunk costs. Can't see Bucholtz getting DFA. Being in last year of contract and with a definite need for pitching, but ?? What about a change of scenery deal. Something like clay for A Sanchez???

It only works with players with less than five years of service time, so it wouldn't work for Sandoval.

Ignominious signing...to say the least.

They need to try to erase his swing and rebuild it from scratch. He probably will never learn to hit breaking balls well, but if he could get the ball into the air with some frequency, with his power he'd run into enough pitches to be a viable 4th OFer, given his defense. You have to wonder whether he might be a little on the hard to coach side, though.

Or is your general frame of mind not to try to fix things that are broken?

My thoughts exactly, sox seem to have changed their tune with him and just want to move on, in my mind, it screams of a guy that is uncoachable,
