Boston Red Sox redsoxThe #RedSox today acquired RHP Brad Ziegler from Arizona in exchange for two minor leaguers: RHP Jose Almonte and INF Luis Alejandro Basabe. Boston Red Sox redsoxTo make room for Ziegler on the 40-man roster, LF/C Blake Swihart was transferred to the 60-day disabled list (left ankle sprain). #RedSox

A couple of mediocre prospects for a bullpen rental. Might miss Alejandro a bit, but I can live with it.
I admittedly don't know much about Ziegler, but the stats say that this is a good move. Hope his success translates to the AL East.

Really like this trade. Ziegler is a very good pitcher. His best skill is limiting home runs. That's tough in Arizona because that ballpark is a great home run park. I like the strategy of making smaller moves to shore up some areas instead of overspending since there's not really a great starter on the market

1) sorry to Eric, you believed in him as I'm sure some AZ folks do (I personally do too).
2) sorry to the Basabe brothers. Not many people get to play a sport with their brother as long as you did. Hopefully you're both active rivals for a long time.
3) I hope to god Farrell is smart enough to use a 60+ GB% when there's men on base. This guy could give us some clutch double plays down the stretch. Please use him correctly, Farrell!

He could be a great asset versus Toronto's top of the order (Bautista, Donaldson, EE) as he dominates RHHs and Tazawa for some reason always gets destroyed by them. This is just one example, if used correctly this guy can be a weapon, now its up to Farrell (ugh).

Hate to see AJ Basabe go, because he looks very solid as a future utility guy with some upside, but this is a nice get. Not a great pitcher, but a good one who's a good fit for both the park (and division), and the staff, which could use a double-play guy in the 'pen. Basically, a better and more consistent Badenhop. He's had BABIP musfortune this year and still has been pretty solid. Very nice move. Now just a 4/5 starter. Just stay away from the light...and Teheran. getyarn.io/yarn-clip/1e3df778-7137-47da-be0b-31b6ec0ed6fc

Basabe has been fun to follow but there's no way to complain about getting a proven reliever (rental) for two distant lottery tickets with limited upside. Good move.
Even after the move, the Drive are still loaded.

I like it. That it's another rental makes you wonder whether DDo is thinking the same way for the extra SP, which suggests Hellickson or Cashner. Although you would certainly see if Billy Beane loves some prospect(s) you're secretly low on.
I doubt O'Sullivan gets another start, but they don't need a 4th starter until the 19th. So he could be the one being optioned to make room, with Buchholz being able to start on the 19th if they somehow haven't traded for someone by then.
Hmm ... then maybe Hembree gets optioned when they trade for a starter, and Layne get's DFA'd when E-Rod returns.
It's going to be hard to fit E-Rod into the 5th slot, though. It comes up first on the 23rd, but he'll be starting the 14th and 19th at the earliest. So there's no way to get him two more starts on regular rest before they need him. One possibility would be have Buchholz take the 5th starter job until E-Rod is ready, and just have E-Rod pitch the day after him, giving everyone else an extra day's rest. Those pair of starts would be against either the Twins or Angels, which mitigates things somewhat.

This kind of trade makes sense, but I'm beginning to worry about the mid-term system depth. The Sox have basically lost 2 international classes and have a one-man draft this year. The current/coming young core will help buy time but I think 2-3 years from now our system will start feeling barren as prospects are only going up or out. There might be a time as soon as this off-season to use our major league depth (Shaw, Holt, some middle relief) to buy back a few lottery tickets.

Must have fooled Dave Stewart into thinking this was the good Basabe.
(We're sure it wasn't, right?)

This is another intelligent trade that should be accepted easily by the players and fans. According to Dave Stewart, the trade came together over the last couple of days. The structure of information and decision making seems much better under DD.
I can see the Red Sox go wild in next year's international signing period to fill in the depth from these trades.

Brad Ziegler Career:
4.64 FIP vs. LHB 2.69 FIP vs. RHB
But he's a "proven closer" so you know Farrell's going to assign him an inning and send him out there no matter how many LHB happen to be coming...

I really like this trade. Hopefully, Kimbrel's injury isn't too bad and Ziegler can fill the Carson Smith role.

The only to not like this trade is the splitting up of the twins. Once could dream on 2 Luis Basabes in the same Red Sox lineup one day.
This increases the chance that the other Basabe gets traded at some point, too. Well, maybe not, but if the Sox are going to have a killer B outfield for the next 5-6 years +, there may not a place for X Basabe. He might be an excellent trade chip as develops in the high minors. A lot can happen with that Killer B outfield, though.

Brad Ziegler Career: 4.64 FIP vs. LHB 2.69 FIP vs. RHB But he's a "proven closer" so you know Farrell's going to assign him an inning and send him out there no matter how many LHB happen to be coming... Lefties slugged .476 against him from 2008 to 2011, but only .341 since. The jump in left-handed OBP (.415) against him this year would be slightly alarming. Until you remember that he pitches against the Diamondbacks, and they've made him issue 5 intentional walks to left-handers already this year despite the fact they have a .373 SLG against him. That's 40 points of his OBP against that's been simply given away. So yeah, he's obviously stronger against righties than lefties, but I'm pretty comfortable with him in any situation.

D-Domski is showing he's very capable and dispelling the caricature some have tried to portray as a guy who's always looking to give up the next Randy Johnson for a short-term fix. He's added two useful pieces without touching the Big Four prospects. He hasn't even touched the top 20 - which should leave him flexibility to make a little bigger upgrade for a SP or another RP or position player.
The bad news is that we're losing players faster than he can add them. Hill looked like an upgrade but Holt is probably down for awhile, so we're running in place there. And Kimbrel + Tazawa > Ziegler.
