Some of the Ground Rules are applied loosely in here, as we understand that there is a tendency to want to react (or overreact) to every play of a Sox game with one line reactionary posts. Those posts are okay in the Red Sox Series threads to a point - we certainly appreciate the passion. Just try not to overdo it, and try to maintain some semblance of reason. Sadly this series has reverse lock written all over it.

Sadly this series has reverse lock written all over it. ? How do you figure? The Giants have the best record in baseball. That means the reverse lock would be if the Sox swept, which wouldn't be sad. Unless this was a reverse jinx attempt?

Unless this was a reverse jinx attempt? I thought he meant, looking at the pitchers the Giants are throwing out there, we should win both games, but we'll probably end up losing both games. And I think it was a reverse jinx attempt, as well. It does look like good pitching matchups for us, on paper. But we'll see what happens when they play the games

Sox about to go into the cauldron - first a stretch of 43 games in 44 days, of which 21 are road games, followed by a day off then 29 more games with only 2 days off; of those, 19 are road games. The stretch includes two west coast road trips.
Roster expansion aside, you can almost see Farrell's bullpen management during this stretch becoming the equivalent of riding down the highway on shredded tires and rims, shooting sparks all the way into late September.

Friday night he actually used his backup closer, Ziegler, in the 7th against R-L-R, and then extracted Ross from the Close-Game Witness Protection Program to pitch the 8th against S-L-L. My head almost exploded. I'd like to think they've had some conversations with him about better and more flexible matchups.

There are some poor teams out west.......I wouldn't be surprised if Farrell summoned Taz even though he's on the DL.

Sadly this series has reverse lock written all over it. Yeah, too bad we're not facing Bumgarner and Cueto and could have the reverse lock working for us instead. Seriously, their other starters have 8.8 bWAR in 64 GS and these guys are -1.0 in 29. We can use a break like that. Peavey, however, had an 8.21 ERA in his first 9 starts and a 2.60 in the subsequent 9. xFIP- of just 120, but 2.6 HR/FB%, .272 BABIP to yield a 68 ERA-. Cain, in contrast, is coming off the DL, and had a 4 10 9 9 3 2 line in his last rehab stint. In high-A (granted, in Lancaster).

You guys got me at reverse jinx attempt (: although I always have this irrational fear when we somehow luck into having a great pitching matchup, this being the Giants and this being an even year makes that even worse.

In terms of opponent quality, Boston also has the easiest remaining schedule in the division: www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-pirates-have-the-easiest-schedule-left/

I hadn't been looking ahead on the schedule but I knew this kind of thing must be coming. The Sox have played 90 games, tied with the Brewers for the fewest in MLB, leaving them with 72 remaining. In the next 76 days (including today), games vs off days: Orioles 71/5 (0 in July, 2 in August, 3 in September) Red Sox 72/4 (0 in July, 1 in August, 3 in September) Blue Jays 68/8 (2 in July, 3 in August, 3 in September) Yankees 70/6 (1 in July, 3 in August, 2 in September) Rays 70/6 (2 in July, 2 in August, 2 in September)
Aside from strength of schedule, Toronto has a real advantage here IMO.

The stat guys and probably Bannister had time to sit down with Farrell over the All-Star break.

Aside from strength of schedule, Toronto has a real advantage here IMO. They also have that Cleveland game to makeup with no trips to Cleveland. That's gonna be an issue I think.

There's no excuse for this offense not to tear it up against this bum.

Ortiz and Sandy are willing this team to the post-season. Sandy's greatest achievement will be to be mentioned in the same breath as Ortiz by at least one poster in soxprospects.

Sandy's greatest achievement will be to be mentioned in the same breath as Ortiz by at least one poster in soxprospects. He will also catch Keith Couch's first MLB pitch and the world will implode on the sheer unabashed ridiculous awesomeness of the whole situation, you can book it.
